Saints Grab Late Winner to End Arsenal’s Unbeaten Run

Posted on by

first_imgPREMIERSHIPCharlie Austin’s 85th-minute header clinched 3-2 victory for Southampton Manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl, on his home debut and ended Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run.In a see-sawing encounter, the hosts took the lead after 20 minutes as Danny Ings muscled home a header from Matt Targett’s cross. Henrikh Mkhitaryan nodded in shortly after for Arsenal, following good work by Alex Iwobi and Nacho Monreal – but Ings struck again just before the break.Nathan Redmond’s floated cross was precise and Ings cushioned a looping effort into the far corner.Arsenal turned the screw in the second half and restored parity as Mkhitaryan’s shot deflected in off Jannik Vestergaard. The Gunners had their chances with Alex McCarthy impressing in the home goal, but Southampton were dangerous on the break and Shane Long had a goal rightly ruled offside before providing a teasing cross for Austin’s winner. The victory takes Southampton out of the relegation zone and up to 17th.At the final whistle, Austrian Hasenhuttl – nicknamed the ‘Klopp of the Alps’ during his spell at previous club RB Leipzig – celebrated on the pitch with his players before whipping up more decibels from the home support. With rivals Chelsea winning away at Brighton, Arsenal are now three points adrift of the top four.Earlier in the week, Hasenhuttl had sent free drinks vouchers to Southampton’s season ticket-holders to mark his first game at St Mary’s. His accompanying letter promised an “intensive and very hard-working” environment and his players responded by trumping Arsenal’s quality with industry and tenacity.Ings, whose last headed Premier League goal was for Liverpool in Brendan Rodgers’ final match in charge back in October 2015, looked a potent aerial threat, finding space in between Arsenal’s three-man defence to score his two goals. Also heartening for a team at the wrong end of the table, the Saints defence was galvanised.Jan Bednarek typified their whole-hearted commitment, sliding in to steal the ball as Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was poised to put Arsenal ahead in the first half.Hasenhuttl lived every moment on the touchline, visibly reminding himself to stay off the pitch as he celebrated Ings’ first, before ultimately giving way to his emotion and sprinting on to join his players at the final whistle.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Tim Tebow told top NFL, MLB prospect Kyler Murray to ‘follow his heart’

first_img Kyler Murray’s NFL decision ‘made sense,’ Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley says Kyler Murray received sound advice from another two-sport athlete before making the decision to focus on the NFL instead of MLB.Tim Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, told Murray he should follow his heart when deciding between a baseball career that would start with the Athletics or preparing for the NFL draft. NFL Draft 2019: Opening odds favor Dolphins taking Kyler Murray “You know what? Don’t do it for your agents, or your friends and sometimes necessarily even your family. Do it for what’s on your heart, and don’t let other people define you. You’re going to have all these coaches that you look up to and everybody else that’s going to tell you what they think, but what’s most important is following your heart and your passion. And so, I don’t know, hopefully, he did that.”From one dual-sport player to another, Tim Tebow told Kyler Murray to follow his heart regarding Murray’s decision to become an NFL quarterback. pic.twitter.com/qkynrk0BSU— Deesha Thosar (@DeeshaThosar) February 16, 2019After last year’s baseball draft, Murray agreed to a minor league contract with Oakland that had a $4.66 million signing bonus attached. The deal allowed Murray to receive $1.5 million after approval last summer by the league and $3.16 million on March 1 — he now must return a portion of the money he received ($1,285,714).Murray, who was the talk of both leagues before making a decision earlier in the week, had 54 total touchdowns and only seven interceptions as the Sooners starter last season. He is ranked as the No. 2 quarterback in this class by ESPN draft experts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay.center_img Murray, who won the Heisman last year during his only season as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback, announced Monday he was fully committing to football despite being selected ninth overall in the 2018 amateur baseball draft.”Kyler, I think he’s a really good young man, and I think this was a really tough decision for him,” Tebow told reporters Saturday when he arrived at Mets’ spring training. “He loves two sports, and I can really relate to that. And he went with something that he’s been really good at lately and dominating in. When we talked about it, and we did talk about that, I just gave him the advice to follow your heart. Whatever you’re passionate about. Related News “Football has been my love and passion my entire life. I was raised to play QB, and I very much look forward to dedicating 100 percent of myself to being the best QB possible and winning NFL championships,” Murray wrote in a statement posted on Twitter. Tebow, a former NFL quarterback, is now an outfielder in New York’s system. He spent time with the Broncos, Jets, Patriots and Eagles before pursuing baseball full time in 2016.last_img read more
