New Amy Winehouse Biopic In The Works, With Winehouse’s Parents Serving As Executive-Directors

Posted on by

first_imgThe Guardian reports that a new Amy Winehouse biopic is on the way. Amy Winehouse’s family has reportedly signed a deal to make a biopic about the late singer taken far too young. Monumental Pictures’ Alison Owen (Lily Allen’s mother) and Debra Hayward will produce the film, with Winehouse’s parents serving as the film’s executive producers. Amy’s life story will be written by Geoff Deane, and shooting for the biopic is due to start in 2019. Proceeds from the film will benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation.Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s father, said the family had previously been approached regarding a biopic but previously felt the time was still not right. In a statement, Mitch Winehouse said, “We now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent. And we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues.”On July 27th, 2011, London Ambulance Service was called to rising-star singer Amy Winehouse‘s Camden flat. Unfortunately, the medics were too late—Winehouse was found dead, having succumbed to her arduous battle with drug and alcohol abuse at just 27 years old. Though she released only two albums before her death—2003’s Frank and 2006’s Back To Black–her work on the two releases catapulted her to worldwide success and recognition. Back To Black netted the singer five Grammys (including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year) in 2008, tying the record for most wins by any female artist in a single year at that time.Winehouse’s tragically brief career was defined as much by her remarkable talent as it was by her struggles to keep her life together offstage. From an early age, she dealt with a litany of health issues, from drug addiction to alcohol abuse to eating disorders. These problems were only intensified as she saw her popularity and notoriety increase. As Winehouse explained to The Telegraph in her last interview before her death, “I’m not a natural born performer. I’m a natural singer, but I’m quite shy, really…You know what it’s like? I don’t mean to be sentimental or soppy but its a little bit like being in love, when you can’t eat, you’re restless, it’s like that. But then the minute you go on stage, everything’s OK. The minute you start singing.”[H/T The Guardian]last_img read more

China offers farmers cash to give up wildlife trade

Posted on by

first_imgA civet cat — the animal believed to have carried Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) to humans in another coronavirus outbreak nearly two decades ago — is worth 600 yuan.Neighboring Jiangxi province has also released documents on plans to help farmers dispose of animals and financial aid.The state-run Jiangxi Daily newspaper reported last week that the province has more than 2,300 licensed breeders, mostly rearing wild animals for food.Their animals are worth about 1.6 billion yuan ($225 million), the report said. Both Jiangxi and Hunan border Hubei, the province where the coronavirus first emerged in December.Animal rights group Humane Society International (HSI) said Hunan and Jiangxi are “major wildlife breeding provinces”, with Jiangxi seeing a rapid expansion of the trade over the last decade.Revenues from breeding reached 10 billion yuan in 2018, it said.HSI China policy specialist Peter Li told AFP that similar plans should be rolled out across the country. But he cautioned that Hunan’s proposals leave room for farmers to continue breeding exotic creatures as long as the animals are not sent to food markets. The province’s plan also does not include many wild animals bred for fur, traditional Chinese medicine or entertainment.Li said Chinese authorities are nevertheless moving in the right direction.”In the past 20 years, a lot of people have been telling the Chinese government to buy out certain wildlife breeding operations, for example bear farming,” he said.”This is the first time that the Chinese government actually decided to do it, which opens a precedent… [for when] other production needs to be phased out.” The deadly coronavirus — first reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan — is widely believed to have passed from bats to people before spreading worldwide. Two central provinces have outlined details of a buyout program to help farmers transition to alternative livelihoods.Hunan on Friday set out a compensation scheme to persuade breeders to rear other livestock or produce tea and herbal medicines.Authorities are offering to pay 120 yuan ($16) per kilogram of cobra, king rattlesnake or rat snake, while a kilogram of bamboo rat will fetch 75 yuan. Topics :center_img Farmers in China are being offered cash to quit breeding exotic animals as pressure grows to crack down on the illegal wildlife trade that has been blamed for the coronavirus outbreak.Authorities have for the first time pledged to buy out breeders in an attempt to curb the practice, animal rights activists say.China has in recent months banned the sale of wild animals for food, citing the risk of diseases spreading to humans, but the trade remains legal for other purposes including research and traditional medicine.last_img read more

Maryam Usman: It’s Time for Change in Nigerian Sports

Posted on by

first_imgSpecifically, Maryam believes that she, just like the rest Team Nigeria athletes did not have the type of grooming needed to get podium placements.“We cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. If our sports authorities want Nigerian athletes to begin to win like the rest athletes from around the world, we must begin to do things differently to get the type of results others are getting,” stressed the lifter in an emotion laden voice. The three-time Olympian who is a member of the board of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) revealed that she was really determined to make an impact here in Brazil. “It hurts a lot when you know that you have the capacity to do better but because certain things are not right in our preparations for the Games, one then fails to meet set target.”“I don’t want to sound as if I am giving excuses for my inability to make the podium. What I am saying is that we should not go to the next Games in four years time in Tokyo, Japan and also be in this same state of poor outing. I am appealing to whoever will be in-charge of Nigeria sports not allow things again turn lout like this. There should be better preparations, more encouragement for Nigerian athletes. Those other athletes (from other countries) that we competed against had everything as in everything to succeed. It just does not make sense to expect good result from Nigerian athletes who are competing with those who have been preparing in the last three years. We Nigerian athletes are just competing with tears and blood. It is through sheer personal determination to succeed that is driving Nigerian athletes. It just does not add up like that,” she said as a matter of fact. The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist insisted that the girl that won the bronze was her training partner in the United States of America whose preparation was boosted by her country. “But her country took her out of USA to somewhere else to fine tune her preparation for the Olympic Games. She got all the preparation she needed before coming here for the Games. That prepared her for the podium. I got little or nothing.”Just like every top athlete in the world, Maryam said that an Olympic medal is the ultimate and would have loved to have one around her neck to show for her efforts. “I have won a couple of medals in several competitions but I yearn for an Olympic medal. It is the ultimate reward an athlete can get to show that one got to the peak of sport. And so it really hurts when one cannot get to the podium to receive an Olympic medal. Hurts real good.”Asked if she is still going to compete for Nigeria at subsequent competitions before calling it a day with weightlifting, Maryam gave one condition. “The only thing that can encourage me to want to come back for another Olympic is to be adequately prepared. I need at least between two and half years and three years preparation to be sure that I can be among the top three of my sport to get medal. The Olympic is huge and the ultimate that every athlete from around the world want to excel in. We most Africans are usually seen as not capable of defeating our counterparts from other continents but from my experience I have come to realize that with better preparation, we even as Nigerians can do better than anybody because we have the natural talent.Maryam did not mince word to conclude that Team Nigeria’s preparation for Rio2016 is the worst since she has been competing in the sport for the country. But against the general notion that Nigerian athletes perform better with little or no training, Maryam was emphatic is stating she shares no such opinions. “I disagree with such sentiments. People have been training for four years and you cannot just come with your one and half months training hoping to beat those people. It is not possible. Why are other countries doing adequate preparation if such was not necessary? It has never been this bad. Yes we did not win any medal in London four years ago but I was close to getting a bronze before my wrist injury. We had some quality pre-Olympic training which put us in vantage position. But here, one or two months was certainly not enough to get us the desired results.”Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram Duro Ikhazuagbe in RioAfter a post-mortem of her outing here at the 31st Olympic Games ending friday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Nigeria’s female weightlifting star, Maryam Usman, is thinking of calling it a day in the sport that she loves with passion.Maryam who competed in the 75+ category finished 9th overall at the Rio2016. Her performance was a far cry from London 2012 when she narrowly missed the bronze medal because of an injured wrist in the clean and jerk.Speaking with THISDAY on Tuesday night at the sprawling Games Village which housed over 10,000 athletes from all over the globe, Kaduna-born lifter Maryam insisted that she cannot go on like this without a medal to show for her efforts at the Games. The outing in Brazil was her third try to get an Olympic medal.last_img read more

ABU Title: Okorodudu Throws His Weight behind Oladosu to Beat Joe…

Posted on by

first_imgFormer national boxing coach, Jerry Okorodudu, has tipped Rilwan “Real One” Oladosu to dethrone Oto “Joe Boy” Joseph as the African Boxing Union lightweight champion.Real One, who is the West African Boxing Union (WABU) champion, is due to fight Joe Boy for the ABU title at GOtv Boxing Night 20 on 12 October at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.Speaking in Lagos yesterday, Okorodudu, who represented Nigeria at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and won a bronze medal at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia, said he is convinced that Real One will win because he is a better boxer. “I worked with both of them in the national camp and I know them well. Oladosu, I can tell you, is a fantastic boxer. He is really good and I believe will defeat Joseph,” he said.He admitted that Joseph is also good, but relies solely on his punching power to overwhelm opponents.“Joseph is a hard puncher. That is his main weapon. If allowed, he can easily win by a knockout. But if the fight lasts the distance, Oladosu will win. He only needs to avoid being knocked out,” explained the former Olympian.Despite tipping the WABU champion, said he expects the encounter to be close run because both boxers are familiar with each other.GOtv Boxing Night 20 will feature eight fights with some of the biggest names on the domestic scene set to be in action. Among these are Ridwan “Scorpion” Oyekola, national super featherweight champion; Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde, WABU welterweight champion; Tope “TP Rock” Musa and Adewale “Masevex” Masebinu, national light heavyweight champion. Others are Kabiru “KB Godson” Towolawi, Opeyemi “Sense” Adeyemi and Sadiq Adeleke.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram Joe Boylast_img read more

Mourinho responds to Man City’s FFP breach allegations

Posted on by

first_imgJose Mourinho said he would keep his thoughts to himself regarding allegations levelled at Manchester City over alleged Financial Fair Play breaches.German publication Der Spiegel has made a series of claims against Man Utd’s cross-town rivals, insinuating that the club’s owner had been using his own fortune to top up multi-million-pound sponsorship deals with Abi Dhabi companies.Pep Guardiola claimed earlier on Tuesday that he knows nothing about it due to his focus being on his players and tactics as a manager, though eternal rival Mourinho admitted that he felt something might have been going on behind the scenes as City continue to spend big in the transfer market. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! “I have some thoughts from a few years ago,” the Portuguese told a press conference ahead of United’s Champions League clash with Juventus. “But I’ll keep those thoughts to myself.”Clearly eager to move on, the Red Devils boss turned his attention to European matters, confirming that Romelu Lukaku will miss the Juve clash through injury before going on to discuss his team’s slow starts in matches since the beginning of the season.“Lukaku is injured for tomorrow and we do not know for Sunday,” Mourinho said.“We work every day but the reality is that we don’t start matches well, but if we don’t start well and we end well, that’s fine.“It’s good fun for the fans, but football is 90 minutes and especially when your opponent is strong, if you give them a 45 minute advantage, or even 20 or even 10, you have a mountain to climb.“The good thing is that lately, apart from the Juventus match, we were strong enough to climb the mountain and change the match in the last few minutes. “When you play against a super team, like tomorrow, if you give an advantage away, it’s difficult to climb the mountain.“We work a lot on our defensive organization. I’m sure you’re not going to say I do not work on that because you say the opposite!”The reality is that we concede too many goals, and the way that we concede them shows our weaknesses. Weaknesses that sometimes you can hide, sometimes you can’t.”It’s a big match to play tomorrow, they’re favourites to win the competition.”When quizzed on another hot topic, the European Super League, Mourinho was concise in his response:”I’m not interested in that.”last_img read more
