A call for reducing fluoride levels in drinking water

Posted on by

first_img Read Full Story Controversy over fluoride levels in drinking water in Massachusetts has made headlines in recent months as Cambridge, Gloucester, Newburyport, and other towns in Massachusetts relook at the decades-old practice of adding fluoride to public drinking water to reduce dental caries (cavities). Some of the controversy between scientists, dental professionals, anti-fluoride activists, town officials, and others in Massachusetts and across the U.S. might be reduced if the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) proposal for lowering fluoride levels in U.S. drinking water was finalized, according to a Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health researcher.“I know that [the Department of] Health and Human Services in Washington has recommended that [U.S. communities] decrease the level of fluoride in water from 1.0 part per million to 0.7 parts per million. I think we ought to do that right away,” Philippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health, said on WBUR’s Radio Boston on February 5, 2015.Close to 75% of the U.S. population receives drinking water containing 0.7-1.2 parts per million (ppm) fluoride to prevent tooth decay, levels that were based on recommendations from the federal government made more than four decades ago. The decision to add fluoride to a water supply is made by local or state governments.last_img read more

FIFA to extend deadline for three 2014 World Cup stadiums

first_imgWorld football’s governing body, FIFA is set to extend the construction deadline for three of Brazil’s 12 World Cup 2014 venues.Stadiums in the cities of Cuiaba, Sao Paulo and Curitiba are likely to be given until the end of February to be ready, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke indicated Tuesday, reports Xinhua.”Curitiba is the one where we are facing the most problems and won’t be delivered before the end of February 2014,” Valcke told a press conference at Costa do Sauipe, the venue for Friday’s World Cup draw.FIFA president Sepp Blatter said a new report confirmed Sao Paulo’s Itaquerao stadium would not be delivered before Dec 31.Work on the stadium resumed Monday following last week’s death of two workers when a crane crashed into part of the stadium’s facade, causing it to collapse.Blatter said the delays did not jeopardise the stadiums’ World Cup host status. “There are some small delays in construction of stadia. But they are so small that with one exception (Sao Paulo) we can say everything is ready,” Blatter said.last_img read more
