As partial government shutdown continues, your BBB is open

Posted on by

first_img Heather Massey is the Regional Director of the Better Business Bureau in the Permian Basin. Check out www.bbb.org or call 563-1880. While the partial government shutdown is now in its fourth full week, you’ve noticed that many government websites are indicating they are not actively updating their information. Since Better Business Bureau (BBB) is not a government entity, bbb.org is in full operation! BBB is a nonprofit organization that helps people find and recommend businesses, brands and charities they can trust.Finding a trustworthy tax preparer is one thing you’re probably looking for right now, as tax filing season begins January 29. Unfortunately, the IRS is one of the government entities affected by the shutdown. Taxes are still due, and it was indicated recently that tax refunds will more than likely still be processed, however, consumers may find it difficult to get ahold of an IRS agent for tax-related questions. BBB can help!If you’re looking for a trustworthy tax preparer, BBB recommends:>> Get Referrals: Ask friends and family for recommendations, then check BBB Business Profiles at bbb.org and read the complaint details and customer reviews to determine whether you want to work with that tax preparer.>> Look for Credentials: Enrolled Agents, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and tax attorneys have unlimited rights to represent their clients to the IRS on all matters.>> Make sure they’re properly registered: A tax preparer must obtain a PTIN from the IRS. Never let someone work on your taxes unless they have this number. Don’t be afraid to ask about this or other qualifications; a capable professional does not mind questions. So, what else might you have trouble with during the partial government shutdown? Home buyers looking to buy a new home or refinance a mortgage insured by the Federal Housing Administration may be put on standby. Because the lender depends on the IRS to provide and confirm the borrower’s federal tax return, the process will have to wait until IRS employees are back at work.Besides the IRS, other government entities affected by the shutdown may affect you as a consumer. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is closed during the shutdown, meaning loan applications that small businesses and startups typically use cannot be processed. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is also affected, so new housing development grants, loans for new home buyers and housing quality inspections may be delayed.Consumers may also run into problems getting up-to-date information from USA.gov, the National Do Not Call Registry and Federal Trade Commission (FTC), with that website specifically stating; “The FTC is closed due to the lapse in government funding.” Consumers, however, can find up-to-date business and scam-related advice on bbb.org. Just scroll down on the website to the “Latest News” and “Latest Scam Information.” For more information on this story, visit your BBB’s independent blog, watchyourbuck.com.If you come across this scam, report it to local authorities and bbb.org/scamtracker. Giant Epiphyses in a Ross Seal

Posted on by

first_imgTHE Ross Seal (Ommatophoca rossi) is a relatively little-known animal and it was not until recently, when the British Museum (Natural History) received two frozen specimens from the British Antarctic Survey, that any detailed investigation of it could be attempted. Several curious characters have been noted in the first of these seals to be dissected, including a peculiarity of the flippers.last_img

Carbon Emissions By the Construction Industry

Posted on by

first_imgBurning fossil fuels or using electricity results in carbon dioxide emissions (unless the electricity is produced by photovoltaics, wind, or another renewable energy source). Since CO2 emissions cause global climate change, environmentally conscious builders aim to build energy-efficient buildings.Having an energy-efficient home is good for the homeowner, of course, but homeowners aren’t the only ones who use energy. Builders and building materials manufacturers also use energy. There are significant CO2 emissions associated with the energy required to produce building materials and build buildings — energy referred to as the “embodied energy” of the construction project. (For more on embodied energy, see All About Embodied Energy.)There are two types of energy associated with a building over its lifetime: embodied energy and operating energy. For a well-insulated efficient building, embodied energy may amount to between 15% and 50% of the building’s total lifetime energy use.If you are an environmental activist interested in addressing climate change, you’re probably aware of the following two facts:In short, for anyone concerned about climate change, embodied energy really, really matters. What is “embodied carbon”? A recently published book, The New Carbon Architecture, attempts to address the issues of embodied energy and the CO2 emissions associated with the construction industry. The book’s chief author is Bruce King, a member of the GBA Advisory Team during our early years. The New Carbon Architecture includes several chapters written by other contributors, including Chris Magwood, Larry Strain, and GBA blogger Ann Edminster. The book’s authors are aware of the front-loading problem, noting that “carbon emitted today has much, much more impact than carbon emitted after 2050.” The book also notes, “We need carbon reduction strategies that have a positive payback within a 10- to 15-year time frame,… This article is only available to GBA Prime Members Sign up for a free trial and get instant access to this article as well as GBA’s complete library of premium articles and construction details.center_img Start Free Trial Already a member? Jeev Milkha Singh targets Major ambitions at The Open

Posted on by

first_imgThe last time Jeev Milkha Singh turned up for The Open, he had to leave even before the tournament began in 2009 at Turnberry and two years before that he missed the cut at Carnoustie. So there is some unfinished business at The Open for the Chandigarh golfer.India has a lot of interest in this year’s edition with Anirban Lahiri and Daniel Chopra, the Indo-Swede, also in the field. This is only the second time two Indians are teeing up at The Open. The first time it happened in 2009, Jeev pulled out before the start due to injury, while Gaganjeet Bhullar missed the cut on debut.Jeev comes as almost the last man to get into The Open by winning the Scottish Open to end a four-year title drought.Jeev, whose sole top-10 in a Major has been tied ninth at the PGA Championships in 2008, is hoping to continue his great form in links golf.”I like golf in tough and testing conditions. Wind, cold and even rain makes golf, particularly links Golf a real challenge and I actually love it, even though many find it taxing and even frustrating,” says Jeev. The two-time Asian Tour number one produced a stunning play-off victory in Scotland and now wants to treat his third Open appearance as just another tournament. He did not subject himself to any additional pressure by flying to his London home to relax for a day before coming to Lytham on Monday evening and then playing just six holes on Tuesday.advertisement”The course is looking superb. It is in great shape, just the way an Open course is expected to be. The key is to avoid the bunkers of which there are 206, and the rough is unforgiving. So one has to hit straight, stay in the fairways and not get too ambitious,” said Jeev.”This is just another week for me. I’m not going to treat it differently. I want to treat it like another event. That’s why I’ve just showed up on Tuesday and take it from there.”However, the Indian has yet to pop a bottle of bubbly to celebrate his 14th international victory. “It was great satisfaction winning against a top field and tough conditions. We didn’t celebrate. All plans had to change (as he initially wasn’t in The Open field) and I went back to London, got in at 1.30am after Sunday. We didn’t have a chance to celebrate but we’ll do it next week,” he said. “I take a lot of confidence and want to move back into the top-50 and do well in the Majors.”Jeev is happy not just with his form but the fact that he is injury-free. He won four times in 2006 and four times in 2008, followed by a tough period with injuries.”It was a frustrating period. You just have to hang in there and believe that things will turn around. If you do the right stuff, good things will happen,” he said. “When a player is injury-free, he can work harder. It gives him more confidence. Last few weeks, I was having two or three good rounds. I just needed to put in four good rounds. It happened last week and the win came.”last_img read more
