REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Disgraced Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu was a wanted man again after he failed to show up for a court date Wednesday and a judge issued a new warrant for his arrest. Hsu, whose criminal past has roiled the campaigns of top presidential candidates, was scheduled to ask a judge to cut in half the $2 million bail he posted when he turned himself in last week after spending 15 years on the lam from a felony theft conviction. Instead, San Mateo Superior Court Judge Robert Foiles ordered Hsu’s bail forfeited to the county and issued a new arrest warrant. If Hsu is arrested again, he will be jailed without bail. Hsu, a Hong Kong native, was also supposed to turn over his passport Wednesday. His prominent Silicon Valley criminal defense attorney, Jim Brosnahan, said Hsu failed to give the passport to the legal team Monday. “Mr. Hsu is not here, and we do not know where Mr. Hsu is,” Brosnahan said outside court. Brosnahan said “there was some contact” with Hsu a few hours before the scheduled 9 a.m. court appearance, but he declined to say how the contact occurred or who talked with Hsu. Hsu pleaded no contest in 1991 to a felony count of grand theft, admitting that he’d defrauded investors of $1 million after falsely claiming to have contracts to purchase and sell latex gloves. He was facing up to three years in prison when he skipped town before his 1992 sentencing date. Prosecutors said they suspected that Hsu fled the country then. But a few years ago, he re-emerged in New York as an apparel executive and a wealthy benefactor of Democratic causes and candidates. Among them was Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose presidential campaign designated Hsu a “HillRaiser” – a title given to top donors. Presidential contender Barack Obama also received contributions from Hsu for his 2004 Senate campaign. Brosnahan said he didn’t know whether Hsu returned to his Manhattan condominium or stayed in California after his five-hour jail stint Friday when Hsu turned himself in.last_img read more

Australian international fares down 8pc in 2016

Posted on by

first_imgInternational airfares to and from Australia fell by about 8 per cent in real terms in 2016 but an airline industry group has warned rising fees could endanger the bonanza. The Board of Airline Representatives of Australia, which represents 32 international airlines, said real airfares to and from Australia had fallen by almost 40 per cent since 2006.“in 1994, an economy flight from Sydney to Singapore cost about $A2300 in today’s terms,’’ the group said. “Now the same flight ranges from $A320 to $A720.’’Drawing on data from the International Air Transport Association and sources such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics, BARA found overseas visitor trips had grown by 2.4 million over 11 years while the number of overseas trips taken by Australians had grown by 4.9 million over the same period. It said the growth in passenger volumes to and from Australia had benefited from the sustained reduction in real international airfares as well as income growth.Real average air fares had dropped by 38 per cent for Australians heading outbound and 34 per cent for overseas visitors to the country, the group’s analysis found.Airfares are largely affected by the amount of capacity and competition in a market, including the presence of low-cost carriers, but many airlines have also worked hard to improve productivity in recent years.BARA executive director Barry Abrams said competition ensured that productivity improvements at airlines were passed through to passengers but he warned the industry could not keep cutting airfares indefinitely, particularly in an environment where other aviation fees were increasing. An annual report by the Australian Competition and  Consumer Commission recently found that  Australia’s biggest airports were recovering substantially more aeronautical revenue per passenger than a decade ago as they moved to offset increased costs per passenger and grow profit margins. The ACCC estimated that over the past decade, the nation’s four biggest airports had collected $A1.57 billion more in revenue from airlines than they would otherwise have collected if average prices were held constant in real terms.   “Infrastructure charges and everything else can’t keep going up if you want to maintain airfare affordability and support that downward trend that we have,’’  Abrams told AirlineRatings.“With the continual modernisation of aircraft and the efficiency of flight and these sorts of initiatives, there’s still an underlying productivity trend within the airlines.“The question then is will the fees and the charges and the increases from everybody else going to start overwhelming that efficiency trend.’’International airfares to and from Australia fell by about 8 per cent in real terms in 2016, according to an airline industry group.last_img read more

Is This a Joke? eBay and Verizon Win Privacy Award

Posted on by

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#NYT#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… dana oshiro In a surprise announcement, eBay, and Verizon have been awarded the top titles of “Most Trusted Companies for Privacy” by the Ponemon Institute and TRUSTe. According to a recent survey, these companies were shown to offer clear privacy statements, customer-friendly notices, great access to information, solid cookie management and sound data sharing practices. While the companies may excel on paper, it’s hard to believe these are the top privacy-related companies based on public sentiment alone. It appears that the Ponemon Institute’s expert panel and the 6,486 US consumers surveyed have lost their long term memories. When it comes to privacy, eBay has had its fair share of controversies. Despite the fact that it recently announced plans to sell the majority of Skype, it was under eBay that the internet telephony company admitted to a privacy breach by its Chinese partner TOM Online. Not only was the company discovered to be filtering out and saving politically charged messages containing words like “Dalai Lama” and “Tibet”, but a security breech allowed others to gain access to those messages on TOM’s servers. A Citizen Lab report entitled Breaching Trust went so far as to accuse TOM Online of complying to government surveillance. While some of these actions may be considered necessary to offer services in a foreign country, US privacy advocates are adamant against all those who comply with the “Great Firewall of China”. While Verizon was one of the first companies brave enough to stand up against the RIAA’s file sharing crackdowns, in recent years the company has come under fire for its own privacy offenses. In early 2009, the company was ordered by the FCC to stop its aggressive marketing practices. When customers were porting from phone to cable services Verizon was illegally using proprietary client information in its last chance to retain fleeing customers. Meanwhile, in March the company was widely criticized in the blogosphere for its efforts to share customer info with affiliates through an overly complicated 45 day opt-out campaign. The information to be shared with affiliates included services purchased (including call records), billing info and location info. Although eBay and Verizon do have their merits as service providers, they hardly deserve to receive today’s accolades. It looks as if these announcements are more about rewarding privacy policies rather than practices. iPhone 4 Gets Improved Exchange, VPN and Enterprise Support

Posted on by

first_imgAt the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference today Steve Jobs specifically highlighted iOS4’s support for the enterprise. “I wanted to hit for a moment on the enterprise integration – our customers are thrilled,” Jobs said. He announced support for multiple Exchange accounts and support for Exchange Server 2010, as well as improved data protection, device management, and VPN support.Four in 10 iPhones are sold to enterprise users and many businesses are planning to support the iPad, so it makes sense for Apple to improve in this area as well. The new features will make the iPhone competitive with Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices. The improved data protection is a welcome enhancement in light of the data security flaw we covered recently. At present, there is no word on whether that specific issue has been patched.Image via Apple’s iPhone enterprise support site. first_imgThe office of the Coordinator for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam on Wednesday published an “additional draft exclusion list” containing the names of 1,02,462 people. This list is different from the one containing the names of the 40.07 lakh people excluded last year from among 3.29 crore applicants. On this additional list are those whose names were included in the draft NRC published on July 30, 2018, but were subsequently found to be ineligible for three reasons.“People found to be declared foreigners or doubtful (D) voters or with cases pending at Foreigners’ Tribunals discovered after publication of the draft NRC are in the additional list. So are their descendants, as applicable,” a State government spokesperson said. The other categories of people in the additional list are those found to be ineligible while appearing as witnesses in hearings held for disposal of claims and objections, and during the process of verification carried out by the local registrars of citizens registration.According to the office of the NRC Coordinator, the additional list was prepared under the provisions contained in Clause 5 of the Schedule of The Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.“The additional draft exclusion list will not contain the results of claimants and objectees appearing for hearings held for disposal of claims and objections February 15 to June 26. The results of those hearings will be published only in the final NRC to be published on July 31,” an officer handling the NRC exercise said on the condition of anonymity.Officials said hard copies of the additional list would be available at the NRC Seva Kendras and offices of the Deputy Commissioner, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), and Circle officer for public viewing during office hours. Particulars of this list could also be viewed online at www.nrcassam.nic.in.“Those excluded will also be informed individually through letters to be delivered at their residential addresses along with the reason for exclusion. Each letter will mention the venue of claim submission and hearing. Such persons will have the opportunity to file their claims to be settled through a hearing by a disposing officer,” the officer said. The submission of claim and its disposal through a hearing would take place together. The hearing would start from July 5. All such claims would be disposed of thereafter and the results would be declared in the final NRC, the officer said.last_img read more
