Goa govt gives nod to Centre’s draft CRZ notification 2018Panaji, Jul 2 (PTI) The Goa government has given itsnod to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and ClimateChange’s draft Coastal Regulation Zone notification 2018.The state’s nod came in a communication addressed tothe Union ministry by Environment Director of Goa, Ravi Jha,on June 29.Jha, in his communication to MoEFCC Director ArvindNautiyal, stated that the Goa government, after consultingstakeholders, wanted traditional economic activities, existingin notified CRZ areas for generations, to continue.The Goa government also urged the Centre to allow theerection of temporary structures like shacks and huts onbeaches as well as promotional activities like weddings andmusic festivals in the inter-tidal zone, something currentlyprohibited.Jha, in his communication said that since the 2018draft supersedes the earlier 2011 notification, it wasnecessary to include temporary structures, erected in themonths from September to May, as permissible activity in CRZIB, IIA and B and III A and B zones in the new draftnotification.The Goa government further said that the list ofpermissible activities under CRZ should include water sports,beach weddings, music festivals etc.It also sought relaxation of norms to set uplifeguard towers, police booths, public amenities and wastetreatment facilities in these areas.The communication also stressed that construction andreconstruction of dwellings of bonafide citizens be permittedin these areas as per local Town and Country Planning rules.While fishing groups, like the National FisherworkersForum, have opposed the CRZ notification draft claiming thatit fails to uphold the rights of traditional fishermen, NGOshave opposed it for reducing the CRZ area, measured from HighTide Line (HTL), from the current 200 metres to just 50metres.advertisementThe Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Changehad uploaded the draft Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ)Notification, 2018 on its website on April 18, 2018 seekingcomments from the public within 60 days. This rose twitter users to react over how a proposed university can be qualified for the Institute of Eminence tag.Many Twitter users had deeply criticized the move and questioned MHRD for Jio Institute being awarded the status.Few cartoonists shared their cartoons on Jio Institute in a satirical manner on platforms like Facebook and Twitter.Later, MHRD had released a document claiming the parameters under which Jio Institute became the ‘Institute of Eminence.’However, MHRD couldn’t convince people with the clarification provided on Jio Institute on twitter.
