Neotel and NIIT launched an ICT enabled Mathematics laboratory at Khayelihle Primary School in Vosloorus, to the south of Johannesburg, as a means to contribute towards improving maths skills at the primary schools in South Africa. This state of the art laboratory, which will enable primary school students to learn and explore mathematical concepts and verify mathematical facts and theorems using technology tools, was officially opened by Basic Education Deputy Minister Enver Surty on 8 October.“We are very excited about the launch of our first Math Lab in Gauteng,” said Neotel CEO Sunil Joshi. “This lab will help learners to improve their academic performance, build numeracy skills and analytical thinking.“There is a huge math and science skills gap in schools across South Africa, and corporates need to start working together with the government to deploy similar initiatives that will ensure a brighter future for our children.”EXCITING TIMEThe Math Lab provides an opportunity to students to understand, discover and verify the basic mathematical and geometrical concepts through concrete objects and situations (Image: Neotel)This ICT enabled lab uses a unique methodology of teaching mathematics, which teaches the learners to reason, connect ideas and think logically by gaining an in-depth understanding of the subject. The Math Lab provides an opportunity to students to understand, discover and verify the basic mathematical and geometrical concepts through concrete objects and situations, thus building interest and confidence in students learning the subject.Khayelihle Primary School was also presented with multiple teaching and learning aids comprising of technology applications, videos, manipulative, measuring instruments, tables and charts. The teachers will also be provided with training to ensure that the learners derive maximum benefits from the lab.“This is truly an exciting time for our school. The Math Lab will play a huge role in helping our learners to improve their numeracy skills and understanding of numbers,” said Khayelihle Primary School principal Willie Mohlabai. “Mathematics is one of the subjects that most learners struggle with from primary to secondary school.“It is essential for our students to acquire an interest and understanding of this subject at a young age to help them prepare for future learning.”Since 2011, NIIT has provided over 353 schools, across the country with ICT enabled math labs. Neotel and NIIT recently announced the formation of a joint alliance – the N2 Education Hub – to build on that solid foundation and enable growth through Neotel’s network.
“This is a very important agreement for us,” Cricket South Africa’s General Manager Corrie van Zyl said in a statement. “It continues our policy of enabling our second best team to test itself against some of the strongest cricket playing countries in the world. “What is particularly important is that our A side will now tour England in 2017, at the same time as our senior squad is in that country. “England is always an out-of-season tour for us and it will help a lot to know that our back-up players are match-fit in case of need.”‘An excellent opportunity’ 17 April 2014 Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday announced a reciprocal agreement in terms of which the England Lions will tour South Africa in the 2014/15 season and South Africa A will tour England in 2017. The England Lions, England’s A team, will play two four-day test matches and five 50 overs limited overs matches against South Africa A in January and February 2015.‘A very important agreement’ ECB Performance Director, David Parsons, commented: “The Lions tour to South Africa will be an excellent opportunity to take on some very tough opposition in a challenging environment. “It will also offer us an opportunity to test the players at the very highest level and allow the players to ultimately learn a great deal from the trip. “We are look forward to visiting South Africa early next year.’ ENGLAND LIONS 2015 TOUR ITINERARY5-7 Jan: SA Invitation XI v England Lions, UJ Soweto Oval11-14 Jan: SA A v England Lions, Boland Park, Paarl18-21 Jan: SA A v England Lions, Chevrolet Park,, Bloemfontein25 Jan: 1st ODI, SA A v England Lions, Chevrolet Park, Bloemfontein28 Jan: 2nd ODI, SA A v England Lions, Diamond Oval, Kimberley31 Jan: 3rd ODI, SA A v England Lions, Senwes Park, Potchefstroom2 Feb: 4th ODI, SA v England Lions, Mamelodi, Pretoria5 Feb: 5th ODI, SA A v England Lions, Sahara Willowmoore Park, Benoni SAinfo reporter
