Just think of Oscar winner Charlize Theron or Nobel laureates Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Sydney Brenner and Nadine Gordimer. Now the country can again count Helen Zille among that number. The award recognises the Democratic Alliance (DA) leader’s contribution to South Africa’s freedom struggle, and her achievements as Mayor of Cape Town and Premier of the Western Cape province.Zille will receive the accolade at a ceremony on 26 September in Berlin, Germany. It includes an endowment of €10,000 (R97 000), which will go towards educating rabbinical students from South Africa at the Abraham Geiger College in Germany. In 2008 Zille was unanimously named World Mayor, taking the award from 11 finalists selected from over 800 entrants.Respected by publicSince taking the helm at the DA, the 60-year-old has garnered much respect from the public, even from opposition African National Congress (ANC) supporters.Betty Fefe, a staunch ANC follower from the township of Duncan Village in East London, believes that Zille’s presence in the political arena indicates that women can make a difference. She added that the DA leader understands all different types of people and their needs as well. “Before the local election, she was visiting our townships. Now we see her as a good person. In the townships they are saying that even though she is white, she knows how to talk to people,” said Fefe. Those within the DA hold their leader in high esteem. DA councillor Dinesh Vallabh’s first encounter with Zille left him admiring her energy, her logical thinking, and the way she connects with people from every walk of life.He believes that Zille leads with integrity and a dynamism that is natural to her.Equally impressive, he said, was her ability to remember names. “She has the memory of an elephant,” he quipped.Johannesburg-based journalist Priya Pitamber said that the Western Cape premier comes across as a strong woman who is able to speak her mind.In an online question and answer session on World Mayor.com, Zille said the lessons learnt during her years as a political correspondent had helped her become an astute politician. She said she was able to apply those skills to the many challenges she faced in her new career.Pitamber, however, has mixed feelings about journalists who become politicians. “I hope she still has a journalist’s ideal of changing the world for the better, and hopefully she is trying to do that,” she said.If Zille has earned respect as a politician, then she has certainly gained fame for her recent moves on stage. In the months leading up to the 2011 local election, South Africans were bombarded by pictures and videos of Zille performing a dance routine dubbed the “ballot boogie” by a popular local magazine. The dance was used to connect with the public during the DA’s campaign. When she was criticised for it, Zille simply said: “Dancing is part of South Africa’s political culture. I love dancing, even though I am no ‘twinkle toes’. But who cares? The point is to move and enjoy yourself and not to feel inhibited.”Courage and determinationAccording to the South African Union for Progressive Judaism, a person who contributes to pluralism through openness, courage, tolerance and freedom of thought is considered worthy of the Geiger Award. This says much about Zille herself.Johannesburg-born Zille is of German descent. Her parents fled the country in the 1930s when they were persecuted because of their Jewish roots. Her maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother were Jewish. Before her foray into politics, Zille worked as a journalist during the apartheid era at the Rand Daily Mail, an influential liberal newspaper. She was instrumental in revealing the brutal killing of Steve Biko while he was imprisoned in Pretoria in 1977.After involving herself in NGO work, she joined the DA, known then as the Democratic Party, in the mid-1990s.Zille served as a Member of the Executive Council for education and then became leader of the opposition in the Western Cape’s provincial legislature, before being elected as a Member of Parliament in 2004, a position she held for two years. In the 2006 municipal election, Zille and the DA snatched a majority vote in the Mother City, which made her mayor.During her tenure, Zille rid the council of corruption and bad debt by meticulously scouring through contracts approved by the previous administration. These efforts led to her nomination as World Mayor in 2008.When the DA won the government of the Western Cape in the 2009 general election, she said: “If we can prove our ability to govern in the Western Cape as we did in Cape Town, then it would be a milestone for our democracy.”Since then, the Western Cape has become one of the more progressive provinces in the country.About the Abraham Geiger AwardThe man after whom the award is named was a philosopher and renowned thinker of liberal Judaism during the 19th century. The award was created in 2000 by the Abraham Geiger College at the University of Potsdam to honour those who have achieved much in their fields of expertise while following three freedoms Geiger held in high regard. These were; the freedom of conscience and belief, academic freedom, and freedom of expression for all human beings.Previous winners include Catholic priest Hans Küng, Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, Cardinal Karl Lehmann, German-French sociologist Alfred Grosser, Emil Fackenheim, and the scholar Susannah Heschel.Ms Trace VenterMail:Private Bag X9043, CAPE TOWN, 8000Street:Provincial Legislature Building, 1st Floor, 7 Wale Street, CAPE TOWNTel:(021) 483 6062Fax:(021) 483 3921Cell:084 977 9888E-mail:tventer@pgwc.gov.zalast_img read more

But I started to join the pros. Arsenal is a great club, but I needed playing time. I had to play, and I preferred to leave. “It was difficult to stay at Arsenal in the sense that there were big names and a new coach (Unai Emery). I spoke with Per Mertesacker who made me a little hesitant.”He really wanted me to stay. But I felt that the best solution was to leave. At that time I did not yet have contact with Sion, but with other clubs. I was contacted by Sion fifteen days after my decision to leave. I had a preference to return to France but despite some contacts it is Sion who had my preference.” last_img read more

In the years since that traumatic event, the 10 people who died in the crash –including the pilot and co-pilot–have been memorialized with a banner hanging in the rafters of OSU’s home court, Gallagher-Iba Arena, and a memorial located inside the Athletics Center. Also, each year, at the home game closest to the date of the crash, Oklahoma State honors the 10. This post from the Cowboys’ official athletics Instagram account has all the details on the ceremony before tonight’s game against Baylor: Very touching and appropriate tribute for those whose lives were inexplicably cut short, and it’s incredible to think 14 years has passed since this tragedy happened.last_img read more

Buckeyes finish nonconference season undefeated with 10040 win over UTMartin

Posted on by

The No. 2-ranked Ohio State men’s basketball team completed a perfect non-conference season and improved to 13-0 with a 100-40 victory over the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks on Monday. William Buford led the way for the Buckeyes with a season-high 23 points. The junior guard got off to a fast start, connecting on his first four shots and scoring the team’s first seven points. “I had my legs under me today and was just focused in on if I had good looks, just take them and knock them down,” Buford said. Coach Thad Matta said he was content to ride the hot hand, as Buford matched his previous season high of 16 points in the first 20 minutes of action. He was also the last starter to get a rest, first leaving the court with 10:59 remaining in the first half. “Will is one of those guys who gets stronger as the season goes on,” Matta said. “That was good to see him play well and go 9-for-11.” Behind 12-, 13- and 10-point scoring runs and solid team defense, the Buckeyes built a 49-17 halftime lead. Those trends continued as OSU opened the second half with an 18-0 run to extend the lead to 67-17. Buford accounted for seven points, two steals and an assist over that five-minute, 37-second stretch. Freshman Deshaun Thomas added 20 points and nine rebounds, and classmate Jared Sullinger recorded his sixth double-double of the year with 18 points and 11 boards. The Buckeyes shot 59 percent from the field en route to their second 100-point performance this season. OSU held the Skyhawks to a mere 27 percent shooting, the best they’ve done against any opponent this season. “I didn’t think it would be as bad as it was,” said Skyhawks coach Jason James. With OSU starting the game with a 27-5 run, Matta was able to go to the bench early and often. Nine Buckeyes saw playing time in the first half, and 10 saw at least six minutes of action. “We’ve been able to get guys a lot of minutes,” Matta said. “I just hope they keep the same mind set and work to get better.” With an 89-32 lead, Matta went with a lineup of five freshmen for the final 5:54 of the game. The lopsided score prompted many in attendance to make an early exit. Those who stayed stood in applause as Thomas approached the free-throw line with a chance to push the Buckeyes’ point total to the century mark. “We were just ready to come in and blow this team out, you know, get 100,” Thomas said. “How we play and (with) how many teammates we have that can score the ball, we can put up 100 every game.” The last time OSU was undefeated entering conference play was during the 2005-06 season, which saw the Buckeyes earn an outright Big Ten title. This year’s team will start its quest to equal that accomplishment when it travels to Indiana on Friday. “That’s a whole new season,” Buford said. “That is nothing like the non-conference.” read more

As part of this partnership, the companies plan to conduct pilot programs throughout the year to understand “how self-driving technology could change the delivery experience for consumers, enable brick-and-mortar retailers to reach new customer bases, and transform the way commerce moves,” Ford’s Vice President of autonomous vehicles and electrification Sherif Marakby wrote in a blog post.Postmates is an app and web-based service that connects customers with “local couriers who can deliver anything from any store or restaurant in minutes,” the company says on its website. Originally launched in its hometown of San Francisco, the service is now available in more than two dozen states and the District of Columbia (to see if it’s available in your area, head here). The companies hope this partnership leads to more efficient deliveries and helps consumers connect with small and local businesses in their area, according to Marakby.”The way commerce is moving around in cities is dramatically changing, and emerging technology will undoubtedly have an impact on the future of on-demand delivery,” Marakby wrote. “With the knowledge we’ll gain from our partnership with Postmates, we anticipate we’ll be able to better deploy self-driving technology in a way that can help people get what they need faster, while also supporting local businesses that are a big part of communities around the world.”Last year, Ford teamed up with Domino’s to carry out a self-driving pizza delivery experiment in Ann Arbor, Mich., using Ford’s Fusion Hybrid vehicles for deliveries.
