But I started to join the pros. Arsenal is a great club, but I needed playing time. I had to play, and I preferred to leave. “It was difficult to stay at Arsenal in the sense that there were big names and a new coach (Unai Emery). I spoke with Per Mertesacker who made me a little hesitant.”He really wanted me to stay. But I felt that the best solution was to leave. At that time I did not yet have contact with Sion, but with other clubs. I was contacted by Sion fifteen days after my decision to leave. first_imgOklahoma State honors 2001 plane crash victims. On January 27th, 2001, the Oklahoma State basketball program suffered an unthinkable tragedy when eight members of its family (two players and six staffers and broadcasters) died in a plane crash while returning from a game in Colorado. In the years since that traumatic event, the 10 people who died in the crash –including the pilot and co-pilot–have been memorialized with a banner hanging in the rafters of OSU’s home court, Gallagher-Iba Arena, and a memorial located inside the Athletics Center. Also, each year, at the home game closest to the date of the crash, Oklahoma State honors the 10. This post from the Cowboys’ official athletics Instagram account has all the details on the ceremony before tonight’s game against Baylor: Very touching and appropriate tribute for those whose lives were inexplicably cut short, and it’s incredible to think 14 years has passed since this tragedy happened.last_img read more

Buckeyes finish nonconference season undefeated with 10040 win over UTMartin

Posted on by

The No. 2-ranked Ohio State men’s basketball team completed a perfect non-conference season and improved to 13-0 with a 100-40 victory over the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks on Monday. William Buford led the way for the Buckeyes with a season-high 23 points. The junior guard got off to a fast start, connecting on his first four shots and scoring the team’s first seven points. “I had my legs under me today and was just focused in on if I had good looks, just take them and knock them down,” Buford said. Coach Thad Matta said he was content to ride the hot hand, as Buford matched his previous season high of 16 points in the first 20 minutes of action. He was also the last starter to get a rest, first leaving the court with 10:59 remaining in the first half. “Will is one of those guys who gets stronger as the season goes on,” Matta said. “That was good to see him play well and go 9-for-11.” Behind 12-, 13- and 10-point scoring runs and solid team defense, the Buckeyes built a 49-17 halftime lead. Those trends continued as OSU opened the second half with an 18-0 run to extend the lead to 67-17. Buford accounted for seven points, two steals and an assist over that five-minute, 37-second stretch. Freshman Deshaun Thomas added 20 points and nine rebounds, and classmate Jared Sullinger recorded his sixth double-double of the year with 18 points and 11 boards. The Buckeyes shot 59 percent from the field en route to their second 100-point performance this season. OSU held the Skyhawks to a mere 27 percent shooting, the best they’ve done against any opponent this season. “I didn’t think it would be as bad as it was,” said Skyhawks coach Jason James. With OSU starting the game with a 27-5 run, Matta was able to go to the bench early and often. Nine Buckeyes saw playing time in the first half, and 10 saw at least six minutes of action. “We’ve been able to get guys a lot of minutes,” Matta said. “I just hope they keep the same mind set and work to get better.” With an 89-32 lead, Matta went with a lineup of five freshmen for the final 5:54 of the game. The lopsided score prompted many in attendance to make an early exit. Those who stayed stood in applause as Thomas approached the free-throw line with a chance to push the Buckeyes’ point total to the century mark. “We were just ready to come in and blow this team out, you know, get 100,” Thomas said. “How we play and (with) how many teammates we have that can score the ball, we can put up 100 every game.” The last time OSU was undefeated entering conference play was during the 2005-06 season, which saw the Buckeyes earn an outright Big Ten title. This year’s team will start its quest to equal that accomplishment when it travels to Indiana on Friday. “That’s a whole new season,” Buford said. “That is nothing like the non-conference.” read more

Jony Ive Reportedly Felt That Tim Cook Wasnt Interested in Design

Citing multiple unnamed sources, the reports stated that Ive was “dispirited” by Tim Cook’s lack of interest in design, especially considering the close synergy he shared with former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. At the same time, Ive was coming into Apple’s offices much less often than before, “straining the cohesion central to product development,” the WSJ stated.Ive reportedly started showing up at Apple’s offices less often after the release of the Watch. Rather than an iPhone peripheral, Ive saw it was a fashion accessory, clashing with Apple executives over how to position it. The resulting device, at $349, sold only 10 million units (a quarter of the forecast), while “thousands” of copies of the $17,000 gold version went unsold, according to the WSJ.Much like many Apple fans, Ive was supposedly frustrated with the change in company culture from the one — established by he and Jobs — where design ruled. He was not only disappointed by the fact that Tim Cook “showed little interest in the product development process,” but also that Apple’s Board was increasingly filled with directors that had no experience in Apple’s business.Ive was promoted to Chief Design Officer shortly after the launch of the Watch, but only came to the office a couple of days a week, according to Bloomberg. Meetings were often moved to San Francisco where he lived, and even to hotels, homes of employees and other venues. “The team craved being around him,” said a WSJ source close to Apple leadership at the time. “He’s engaging. Him being around less was disappointing.”Ive created numerous iconic projects with Apple, often as a result of discussions, debates and arguments with Jobs. That includes iconic products like the iPhone, iPad, iPod, MacBook Air, Apple Watch and even Apple’s new headquarters. However, recent products like the HomePod and iPhone X models have enjoyed less success, and Apple recently killed its AirPower charging pad, which Ive imagined as a catchall for Apple devices. According to the WSJ, however, “engineering tests found it behaved more like a dorm-room hot plate.”Now his new design firm, “LoveFrom,” will reportedly be paid “millions of dollars a year to continue to work with Apple,” the WSJ said. That could give Ive the best of both worlds, only working on the stuff he wants for Apple without having to deal with internal politics. Add to Queue Ive was often absent from key product meetings, according to the WSJ. July 1, 2019 Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. A scoop from BuzzFeed illuminated as much last night. At a private dinner, Emil Michael, Uber’s SVP of business, suggested a plan to spend $1 million on a revenge campaign against journalists, in particular Sarah Lacy, a writer who has criticized the ridesharing startup. Michael’s apparent plan involves using data, which the company has access to through its app, to dig up information about Lacy’s personal life, then publicly distribute the compromising information. He also talked about hiring opposition researchers to dig up more dirt. The news quickly ricocheted around Twitter. Taken on its own, the story may not have stirred up such a fierce reaction. But the sheer volume of Uber scandals is difficult to ignore. With each new one, Uber’s three constituents – customers, investors and drivers – are questioning the $18.2 billion company. (Kalanick issued an apology today on Twitter.) Below, a look at what got us here:Drivers behaving badlyAn Uber driver has been accused of kidnapping a female rider. An Uber driver was accused of attacking a rider in the head with a hammer. An Uber driver assaulted a rider. Uber’s elaborate plans to sabotage Lyft include aggressively recruiting Lyft’s drivers and cancelling rides on the service to waste the drivers’ time.Uber has even tried to kneecap Lyft’s fundraising (whichFortune’s Dan Primack has argued is fair game; venture investor Fred Wilson disagrees).Playing dirty with the mediaUber tried to plant a fake story that painted a positive picture of life as an Uber driver in LA Weekly after the publication ran a critical story.Surge pricing during emergenciesUber’s famous free-market pricing strategy did not make an exception for Hurricane Sandy, when many New Yorkers were displaced and the cost of taking an Uber car doubled. After complaints, the company said it would cap surge-pricing in emergencies.Regulatory fights and protestsUber tussles with the legacy black car and taxi industry in almost every city it enters. Many cities have tried to outlaw the service. When Berlin banned Uber, the company flouted the government and continued to operate. In other instances, Uber’s presence that causes the commotions. In France, a protest of Uber got physical when an Uber car’s windows were broken and its tires slashed. In London, a protest stopped traffic. Now, Uber can’t even release an integration with Spotifywithout writers pointing out that the partnership “furthers the ongoing logistical process of dehumanizing Uber drivers.” That was supposed to be a fluffy product announcement. The Driver Who Sued Uber Slams Offensive Settlement

Posted on by

first_imgClass Action Lawsuits Image credit: Reuters | Lucy Nicholson The Uber driver behind the lawsuit that threatened the company’s business model is now objecting to settling the case.In April, Uber announced that it had reached a $100 million settlement agreement in a court case that had gone on for three years. Douglas O’Connor filed suit against the company in 2013, claiming that Uber had misclassified its drivers as independent contractors and that they should be employees. The culmination of the case was announced in April with a $100 million settlement for drivers in California and Massachusetts. But in a court filing on Monday, O’Connor is now objecting to the settlement that bears his name, saying that it shortchanges drivers of billions.O’Connor said:”I am compelled to submit this declaration objecting to the class action settlement on behalf of myself and on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of other Uber Drivers in the State of California — and throughout the Country — who were at first given hope and a voice by the lawsuit bearing my name but now feel utterly betrayed and sold-out by an unjust settlement result that only benefits Uber.”In his objection, O’Connor claims that he never saw a copy of the settlement before Uber announced it in April. After it was announced, he claims that he was pressured into quickly signing the 100-page document. After reviewing the settlement, O’Connor doesn’t believe that the agreement is in the best interests of Uber drivers. He wrote:”Having now had the full opportunity to review the O’Connor settlement agreement, it is apparent that under the agreement, Uber drivers are being sold out and shortchanged by billions of dollars while sacrificing the determination of their classification as employees.”He initiated the case against Uber three years ago because he felt that the company misclassifying its drivers was “the most significant hazard to the economy and public safety,” he says. The settlement doesn’t answer that question.O’Connor says in the objection:”Unfortunately, the magnitude of this generational threat was given short shrift in the O’Connor class action as almost no meaningful discovery or depositions were taken, but where the average Uber driver will now receive an offensive settlement worth less than a tank of gas. I cannot in good conscience support this disastrous settlement agreement.”Uber declined to comment on the objection. Shannon Liss-Riordan, his former attorney, said that the things O’Connor is saying “are simply not true.”Liss-Riordan wrote in an email to Business Insider:”The case was at risk of being gutted by the Ninth Circuit and we made the choice we did, in consultation with our clients. Mr. O’Connor was not a lead plaintiff, and had not been certified to represent the class, but I kept him in the loop because the case bore his name. I believe the settlement was in the best interests of the class, in light of the risk we faced if having the case pulled out from under us by the Ninth Circuit. But if the court disagrees and thinks the settlement should not go forward for some reason, I would be more than happy to plow forward with it and do what I need to do.” Next Article May 17, 2016 Add to Queue 2019 Entrepreneur 360 List Biz Carsoncenter_img 3 min read This story originally appeared on Business Insider –shares The Driver Who Sued Uber Slams ‘Offensive’ Settlement Apply Now » The only list that measures privately-held company performance across multiple dimensions—not just revenue.last_img read more

Thalamus controls development of normal sleep and waking states study finds

Posted on by

first_imgReviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Oct 12 2018Consciousness requires continuous, internally generated activity in the brain. The modulation of this activity is the basis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) and of generation of sleep, dreams, and perception. Achieving such activity is thus an important milestone in normal brain maturation, which occurs around birth. Successful transition to this activity indicates a good prognosis for babies born prematurely and/or suffering from damage to the brain. To be functional as a dreaming, seeing, and thinking entity the brain need to achieve two milestones: continuity, which means that the brain is always active and state dependence, meaning brain activity is modulated by sleep, waking, and attention. The circuit mechanisms behind the development of continuity and state dependence in the brain have remained unknown, but have been widely assumed to be located in the cerebral cortex, the convoluted brain structure responsible for thought and perception.A team from the George Washington University (GW) has published a study in the Journal of Neuroscience suggesting instead that the thalamus, a tiny nucleus deep in the brain, actually controls the development of state dependence and continuity.”Our results indicate that cellular changes in the thalamus relay function may be critical drivers for the maturation of background activity,” Matthew Colonnese, PhD, associate professor of pharmacology and physiology at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, said. “Humans undergo developmental transitions in brain activity before and near birth.”Related StoriesResearch team to create new technology for tackling concussionMercy Medical Center adds O-arm imaging system to improve spinal surgery resultsStudy provides new insight into longitudinal decline in brain network integrity associated with agingDrawing on previous work by Colonnese, his team used advanced techniques to record simultaneously from multiple brain regions to pinpoint the circuit change responsible for the acquisition of continuity and state dependence measured in the sensory cortex. They were surprised to learn that activity changes in the thalamus, rather than the local cortical circuitry or the interconnectivity of two structures, can explain most of these critical developmental milestones.”From a clinical perspective, certain things can go wrong in birth, like hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, brain injury caused by lack of oxygen to the brain, and the brain can revert to a state of discontinuity or never develop continuity,” said Colonnese. “These findings could help us understand the circuit basis of human EEG development to improve diagnosis and treatment of infants in vulnerable situations. By putting the development of the EEG on a mechanistic basis we hope to increase its utility in the clinic.”Colonnese and his team, which includes Yasunobu Murata, PhD, a research scientist in Colonnese’s lab at GW and co-author of the study, are working to develop a comprehensive atlas of EEG patterns and brain lesions that cause them to aid in this process. Now that they have established the thalamus is in control, he said, the next step is to further define what circuit changes occur in brain development so clinicians can pinpoint from an EEG what’s gone wrong in cases like hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.Source: https://smhs.gwu.edu/news/new-study-finds-thalamus-wakes-brain-during-developmentlast_img read more

Alzheimers disease protection from exercise hormone irisin

Posted on by

first_imgBy Dr. Ananya Mandal, MDFeb 11 2019Exercising is good for health and there is yet another reason for it. Exercise is known to release certain endogenous hormones called “feel good” hormones or endorphins. Yet another hormone may be released from the body when a person exercises – this is called irisin. Irisin is found to be protective against Alzheimer’s disease finds a new study. The results of the new study were published in the journal Nature Medicine. Irisin – Image Credit: Ibreakstock / Shutterstock The study led by researchers at the Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, co-authored by Dr. Ottavio Arancio, a Professor of pathology and cell biology and of medicine at the institute, finds evidence of the positive role exercise could play in brain health. According to the researchers, there was evidence that exercise can reduce the risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease. The reason for this was not known. The hormone irisin was found a few years ago. It was noted that irisin was released in blood during exercise and physical activity. It was hypothesized that irisin could play a role in energy metabolism of the body. This new research has shown that irisin is capable of promoting new neuron growth in the brain. It is especially beneficial at the hippocampus region of the brain which is necessary for memory and learning. Arancio said, “This raised the possibility that irisin may help explain why physical activity improves memory and seems to play a protective role in brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.”The team including those from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Queens University in Canada extensively studied the connection between irisin and A;zheimer’s disease. They gathered brain tissue samples from brain banks and noted that irisin is normally present in the hippocampus region of the brain and among those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, there us a reduction in levels of this hormone in the hippocampus.Related StoriesHealthy lifestyle lowers dementia risk despite genetic predispositionExercise during pregnancy can promote bone health of both mother and childStudy highlights the need for larger Alzheimer’s drug trials that intervene much earlierThe team used laboratory mice to assess the benefits provided by irisin to the brain. They noted that presence of irisin in the brain of mice can protect their memory and preserve the nerve connections called the synapses. They then disabled irisin in the hippocampi of the mice brains. Thereafter there was a decline in memory and damage to the synapses was noted. When irisin levels were raised, there was an improvement in brain health, the researchers noted. As a next step the researchers assessed the type of exercise that could raise irisin in the brain and benefit brain health. It is known that beta amyloid protein causes formation of clumps within the brain that leads to symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The mice were made to swim daily for five weeks and were administered infusions of beta amyloid protein. Despite the infusions, these mice did not develop memory impairment akin to Alzheimer’s disease, they noted. This means that despite the pathology, irisin has the capacity to stop the progressive memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease say the researchers. Now if irisin was blocked in the swimming animals using a specific drug, these mice developed memory impairments due to infusions of the beta amyloid. The researchers hope that this study can extrapolate into new therapies for Alzheimer’s disease based on irisin. Arancio in a statement said, “In the meantime, I would certainly encourage everyone to exercise, to promote brain function and overall health. But that’s not possible for many people, especially those with age-related conditions like heart disease, arthritis, or dementia. For those individuals, there’s a particular need for drugs that can mimic the effects of irisin and protect synapses and prevent cognitive decline.”Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-018-0275-4last_img read more

Legendary Persecuted CodeBreaker Alan Turing Finally Recognized for His Achievements

Posted on by

first_imgIf it weren’t for the legendary World War II code-breaker Alan Turing, the outcome for the Allied forces might have looked very different. The mathematician and computer scientist has been widely credited with hastening the end of the war, thanks to his work decoding German naval messages. But only seven years after the end the war, Turing, who was gay, was convicted of “gross indecency” for his relationship with a 19-year-old man. Turing wasn’t formally pardoned until 2014. Now, 65 years after Turing’s death, the Bank of England is recognizing the trailblazer’s contributions to science and technology by featuring his face on the brand-new design of their 50-pound note. “It was nothing short of a tragedy how a country he had served with such distinction treated him after the war, persecuting him for his homosexuality,” said Demis Hassabis, a British artificial intelligence (AI) researcher, at the unveiling ceremony in Manchester. “That’s why it’s wonderful to see Turing on the note, as a powerful symbol of the long overdue recognition he deserves.” Not only did Turing’s contributions to math and computer science aid the Allied war effort, they also laid the foundations for modern computers. In his 1936 paper titled “On Computable Numbers,” Turing invented the concept of algorithms, sets of instructions that dictate how computers operate, BBC reported. He was also one of the earliest computer scientists to begin thinking about AI. His ‘Turing test’ is still used to determine whether a machine is “intelligent” or not. “As the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, as well as a war hero, Alan Turing’s contributions were far ranging and path breaking,” Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, said in a statement. “Turing is a giant on whose shoulders so many now stand.” The new banknote won’t just feature Turing’s face. It will also include a ticker tape of binary code that spells out his birthday (June 23, 1912), a depiction of the machine he used to help break the German Enigma code, and his signature. Turing wasn’t the only scientist considered for this new note. In total, 989 scientists were nominated. The short list included Rosalind Franklin, Stephen Hawking and Adam Lovelace, among others.
