first_imgOxford destroy West Ham with four-goal thrashingby Freddie Taylora month agoSend to a friendShare the loveWest Ham United have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a shock 4-0 defeat to League One side Oxford United. The Hammers were dire as Oxford run riot at Kassam Stadium.Manuel Pellegrini made eight changes to the team that beat Manchester United last Sunday and was punished accordingly.Second-half goals from Elliott Moore, Matty Taylor, Tariqe Fosu and Shandon Baptiste gave the U’s a deserved victory.Speaking after the game, Pellegrini said: “We played against a team who played very well.”It’s easy to say that we played very badly, but I think Oxford did everything they needed to win this game here at home for them.”They played with a lot of motivation, with desire and we didn’t play well.”If you give them time and space all of them are good players. They scored four goals, they had other chances and I think we only created one in the first ten minutes of the game and one in the last minute.”In the second half we lost all the moments [which decided the match].”If you want to continue playing in all competitions you have to use your whole squad, and we played with [experienced] players. I repeat, Oxford made it tough and after that [we perhaps showed a] lack of belief that these games are always very difficult for the teams who are in the better league.”Of course for the fans who came to Wimbledon, and to Oxford today, it’s not the best way to answer them. Football is like this, unfortunately it was a very bad night for some players and we’ll try to recover in our next game in the Premier League.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Doublesize party at Maple Leaf Square as fans unite after Toronto van

Posted on by

first_imgTORONTO – Still reeling from Monday’s deadly van attack, hundreds of Torontonians braved the rain outside Air Canada Centre on Wednesday night to cheer on the city’s teams as they played in pivotal games.Five of Toronto’s professional sports teams were in action with four of them — the Maple Leafs, Raptors, Toronto FC, and Marlies — in playoff games. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment hosts an outdoor viewing party beside Air Canada Centre for all Leafs and Raptors post-season games, and the corporation stepped up to host a double-sized celebration for those two teams, with smaller screens dedicated to TFC and the Marlies.“It’s extremely rare to have the Leafs, the Raptors, TFC, the Jays and even the Marlies playing on the same day,” said Eddie Baruela, one of the first fans into Maple Leaf Square. He was wearing merchandise from each team and had a mask of Raptors all-star DeMar DeRozan.“I’m going to have to swivel my head 360 degrees to keep track of both games. Depending on how momentum shifts, I’ll have to focus on the Leafs game and then sometimes the Raptors game and then focus on the TFC game later.”Game 5 of the Raptors first-round playoff series with the Washington Wizards was shown on a large screen on the west side of the arena. Two more screens on the opposite side of the square had on Game 7 of the Maple Leafs’ playoff series with the Bruins in Boston. Organizers promised fans that as soon as the Raptors game was done, the bigger screen would switch to the NHL game and then all screens would change to Toronto FC at Chivas Guadalajara in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final.Just two blocks west of Maple Leaf Square, the Blue Jays were hosting the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre in a regular-season game. Toronto is chasing Boston for top spot in the American League East. The American Hockey League’s Marlies faced the Utica Comets in the Game 3 of their best-of-five series, with Toronto holding a 2-0 lead.MLSE owns the four playoff teams, while the Blue Jays are owned wholly by Rogers Communications, a co-owner of MLSE.A moment of silence honouring the victims of Monday’s van attack was held in Maple Leaf Square, mirroring a similar ceremony inside the arena. Raptors and Wizards players held up Toronto Strong banners as the national anthems were played before tipoff, honouring the 10 people killed and 14 injured in Monday’s horrific van attack in the north end of Toronto.PA announcer Herbie Kuhn told the Air Canada Centre crowd that the Raptors, Wizards and NBA would be making donations to the TorontoStrong Fund set up by the city of Toronto. The fund had raised more than $413,000 as of 5:30 p.m. ET Wednesday.“Toronto will be forever strong,” said Kuhn, prompting a round of loud applause.Outside the arena, many fans felt that the public celebration was necessary to help heal the city.“It’s amazing, it’s amazing,” said Lucas Stockley, wearing a Leafs jersey on the hockey end of the square. “The fact that that happened was tragic, so sad for the city. The fact that we all come together for a night like this, it’s truly inspirational.”Stockley’s friend Mike Ireland added: “Got to rally around sports.”Event organizers worked with Toronto Police Services to insure the safety of fans. Maple Leaf Square viewing parties are usually directly beside the arena, but with the additional screens for the NHL playoff game police and organizers split the square into two large fenced-off areas. Traffic was barred from the surrounding streets and fans were searched before entering the square.— With files from Neil Davidson___For more information, visit https://torontofoundation.ca/torontostrong/last_img read more

Synthetic peptide may help treat Alzheimers disease

Posted on by

first_imgWashington: Scientists have developed synthetic peptides that target and inhibit build up of small, toxic proteins which trigger Alzheimer’s disease. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may be pave the way for treating the neurodegenerative disorder at an early stage. Alzheimer’s is a disease of aggregation. Neurons in the human brain make a protein called amyloid beta. Such proteins on their own, called monomers of amyloid beta, perform important tasks for neurons. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USHowever, in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease, amyloid beta monomers have abandoned their jobs and joined together. First, they form oligomers — small clumps of up to a dozen proteins — then longer strands and finally large deposits called plaques. For years, scientists believed that the plaques triggered the cognitive impairments characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. However, newer research implicates the smaller aggregates of amyloid beta as the toxic elements of this disease. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential pollsResearchers at the University of Washington in the US have developed synthetic peptides — which are designed to fold into a structure known as an alpha sheet — can block amyloid beta aggregation at the early and most toxic stage when oligomers form. The team showed that the synthetic alpha sheet’s blocking activity reduced amyloid beta-triggered toxicity in human neural cells grown in culture, and inhibited amyloid beta oligomers in two laboratory animal models for Alzheimer’s. These findings add evidence to the growing consensus that amyloid beta oligomers — not plaques — are the toxic agents behind Alzheimer’s disease. The results also indicate that synthetic alpha sheets could form the basis of therapeutics to clear toxic oligomers in people, according to Valerie Daggett, a professor at University of Washington. “This is about targeting a specific structure of amyloid beta formed by the toxic oligomers,” said Daggett. “What we’ve shown here is that we can design and build synthetic alpha sheets with complementary structures to inhibit aggregation and toxicity of amyloid beta, while leaving the biologically active monomers intact,” she said. The peptides protected laboratory animals from toxic oligomer damage. In brain tissue samples from mice, the team observed an up to 82 per cent drop in amyloid beta oligomer levels after treatment with a synthetic alpha sheet peptide. Administering a synthetic alpha sheet to living mice triggered a 40 per cent drop in amyloid beta oligomer levels after 24 hours. In the common laboratory worm Caenorhabditis elegans, another model for Alzheimer’s disease, treatment with synthetic alpha sheets delayed the onset of amyloid beta-induced paralysis. Daggett’s team is continuing experiments with synthetic alpha sheets to engineer compounds that are even better at clearing amyloid beta oligomers. “What we’re really after are potential therapeutics against amyloid beta and diagnostic measures to detect toxic oligomers in people,” said Daggett.last_img read more

Israelis among wounded in US synagogue attack

Posted on by

first_imgJerusalem: Two Israelis were among the Jews wounded in the weekend attack on a synagogue in California that killed one person and injured three others, an official said Sunday. An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said an eight-year-old girl and her 31-year-old uncle wounded in the shooting attack in Poway, north of San Diego, on Saturday were from a southern town bordering the Gaza Strip. “The two moved from Sderot to San Diego a few years ago,” spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said in a statement, noting their condition was “good.” San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said both were wounded by shrapnel in the attack on the final day of the week-long Jewish holiday of Passover. A 60-year-old woman was killed in the attack, with the community’s rabbi wounded as well. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince Salman ‘snubbed’ Pak PM Imran, recalled his private jet from US: ReportIsraeli Diaspora Minister Naftali Bennett called the slain woman, Lori Gilbert Kaye, “a Jewish hero” who threw herself “in the path of the murderer’s bullets to save the life of the rabbi.” Gore identified the suspect, who was arrested after fleeing the scene, as 19-year-old John Earnest and said he had no prior arrest record. US President Donald Trump denounced the shooting as a “hate crime”. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin called the attack “yet another painful reminder that anti-Semitism and hatred of Jews is still with us, everywhere.” “No country and no society are immune,” he said in a Sunday statement. “Only through education for Holocaust remembrance and tolerance can we deal with this plague.” The shooting in Poway’s Chabad synagogue came exactly six months after a white supremacist killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue — the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in US history.last_img read more

Final phase of LS polls in Bihar 4 Union ministers among 159

Posted on by

first_imgPatna: Four Union ministers, a former Lok Sabha Speaker and an actor-turned-politician are among the 159 candidates left in the fray for eight Lok Sabha seats in Bihar after the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers for the seventh and final phase ended Thursday. The final phase of the election will be held on May 19. According to the Election Commission, a total of 227 candidates had filed their nomination papers for Patna Sahib, Patalputra, Arrah, Jehanabad, Karakat, Buxar, Sasaraam and Nalanda constituencies between April 22 and April 29. Out of which only 162 withstood scrutiny. Also Read – 2019 most peaceful festive season for J&K: Jitendra Singh Of those remaining, one candidate each withdrew nomination from Patna Sahib, Pataliputra and Buxar, leaving 159 in the fray. With 35, Nalanda has the highest number of candidates. The constituency is the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who has represented the Lok Sabha seat a number of times. His confidant Kaushalendra Kumar is seeking re-election for the third consecutive term. The JD(U) MP is locked in a straight contest with Mahagathbandhan candidate Ashok Kumar Azad who has been fielded by former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM). Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroad Patna Sahib, which comprises a major part of the state capital and where 18 candidates are in the fray, will witness a clash of titans as Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad seeks to win the seat for the BJP thwarting sitting MP Shatrughan Sinha’s bid to retain it for the third consecutive term but this time on a Congress ticket. In adjoining Pataliputra, 25 candidates are in the fray, though the contest is being seen primarily between Union minister and sitting BJP MP Ram Kripal Yadav who is pitted against RJD’s Misa Bharti daughter of his former mentor Lalu Prasad. The lowest number of 11 candidates, for the phase, are in Ara where sitting BJP MP and Union minister R K Singh’s bid to retain the seat has been challenged by young CPI(ML) candidate Raju Yadav whose chances have been bolstered by the Mahagathbandhan supporting his candidature. In Buxar, another Union minister and sitting BJP MP Ashwini Kumar Choubey is facing the challenge mainly from RJD’s Jagadanand Singh who had won the seat in 2009 although the total number of candidates in the fray is 15. An equal number of candidates are in the fray in Sasaram, a reserved seat which former Lok Sabha Speaker and veteran Congress leader Meira Kumar seeks to wrest back from BJP MP Chhedi Paswan. Karakat, which has 27 candidates, is represented by RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha who resigned from the Union council of ministers and quit the NDA in December last year before joining the Mahagathbandhan. His principal challenger is JD(U)’s Mahabali Singh. Jehanabad was won by RLSP’s Arun Kumar in 2014. He was, however, expelled from the party later on and he is in the fray as the candidate of the parallel outfit Rashtriya Samata Party (Secular). However, the main contest is being seen as between RJD’s Surendra Prasad Yadav who is the Mahagathbandhan candidate and JD(U)’s Chandreshwar Prasad who represents the NDA.last_img read more

How Your Favorite Baseball Team Blows Its Money

Posted on by

For an article on FiveThirtyEight today, Mike Lopez and Noah Davis charted the relationship between spending and win percentage for every baseball season since 1985. They found that the relationship between money and winning in baseball is as strong now as it’s been any time in the free-agency era. Below you’ll see that relationship for each team in the majors. Each season is one dot in the figure, and the colored line is a smoothed curve fit through the points. Essentially, the higher the curve, the more the team’s money was well-spent. The gray line is an aggregation of all the data points across the entire league, and that line shows a pattern: More money generally means more wins.Read more: Don’t Be Fooled By Baseball’s Small-Budget Success Stories »

Buckeyes finish nonconference season undefeated with 10040 win over UTMartin

Posted on by

The No. 2-ranked Ohio State men’s basketball team completed a perfect non-conference season and improved to 13-0 with a 100-40 victory over the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks on Monday. William Buford led the way for the Buckeyes with a season-high 23 points. The junior guard got off to a fast start, connecting on his first four shots and scoring the team’s first seven points. “I had my legs under me today and was just focused in on if I had good looks, just take them and knock them down,” Buford said. Coach Thad Matta said he was content to ride the hot hand, as Buford matched his previous season high of 16 points in the first 20 minutes of action. He was also the last starter to get a rest, first leaving the court with 10:59 remaining in the first half. “Will is one of those guys who gets stronger as the season goes on,” Matta said. “That was good to see him play well and go 9-for-11.” Behind 12-, 13- and 10-point scoring runs and solid team defense, the Buckeyes built a 49-17 halftime lead. Those trends continued as OSU opened the second half with an 18-0 run to extend the lead to 67-17. Buford accounted for seven points, two steals and an assist over that five-minute, 37-second stretch. Freshman Deshaun Thomas added 20 points and nine rebounds, and classmate Jared Sullinger recorded his sixth double-double of the year with 18 points and 11 boards. The Buckeyes shot 59 percent from the field en route to their second 100-point performance this season. OSU held the Skyhawks to a mere 27 percent shooting, the best they’ve done against any opponent this season. “I didn’t think it would be as bad as it was,” said Skyhawks coach Jason James. With OSU starting the game with a 27-5 run, Matta was able to go to the bench early and often. Nine Buckeyes saw playing time in the first half, and 10 saw at least six minutes of action. “We’ve been able to get guys a lot of minutes,” Matta said. “I just hope they keep the same mind set and work to get better.” With an 89-32 lead, Matta went with a lineup of five freshmen for the final 5:54 of the game. The lopsided score prompted many in attendance to make an early exit. Those who stayed stood in applause as Thomas approached the free-throw line with a chance to push the Buckeyes’ point total to the century mark. “We were just ready to come in and blow this team out, you know, get 100,” Thomas said. “How we play and (with) how many teammates we have that can score the ball, we can put up 100 every game.” The last time OSU was undefeated entering conference play was during the 2005-06 season, which saw the Buckeyes earn an outright Big Ten title. This year’s team will start its quest to equal that accomplishment when it travels to Indiana on Friday. “That’s a whole new season,” Buford said. “That is nothing like the non-conference.” read more

Green Shirt Guy just one highlight of city council meeting turned memefest

They disrupted the meeting with shouts and signs opposing the city’s move to put a measure on the November ballot to become a so-called “sanctuary city.”   Broadly, a sanctuary city is a local government with a policy of limiting its cooperation with the federal government’s enforcement of immigration laws.  I just found out my Halloween costume for 2019! What Does Indian Defence Get in Military Projects Worth ₹34260 Crore

Posted on by

first_imgDefence Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday cleared ₹34,260 crore worth projects, including those stuck under the UPA regime, at the first meeting of the Defence Acquisitions Council after the new government came into power. In the meeting held with the Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh, Army Chief Bikram Singh, IAF Chief Arup Raha, Navy Chief Robin Dhowan, Defence Secretary RK Mathur and other secretaries of the MoD, Defence Acquisitions Council (DAC) cleared several dealings, in which majority went to the Navy and the Coast Guard.”There are several projects in the pipeline and we have tried to expedite many of them today. Replacement of Avro jet will be a significant project in which the Indian private sector will play a critical role,” The Hindu quoted Jaitley.Fund DistributionIndian Air Force gets 56 new aircrafts to replace old Avro aircraft, which is getting costlier due to the rising maintenance costs. Avro aircrafts were used for transporting troops and materials over short distances. DAC would issue tender to the private Indian defence companies – Reliance, Tata and Mahindra – who would build 56 aircraft worth ₹15,000 crore, in partnership with foreign firms. The first 16 would be manufactured by the foreign company, who would forward the technology to the Indian partners for the construction of the rest of the helicopters. The Indian Coast Guard would also get five Offshore Patrol Vessels worth ₹2,000 crore to be built by the Goa shipyard and five Fast Patrol Vessels worth ₹360 crore to be supplied by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Calcutta. Indian Navy would get five new combat support vessels worth ₹9,000 crore, within eight years. These vessels would be built by the Indian public and private companies. However, India has only one shipyard capable of building large vessels. DAC would also approach private sector companies, such as ABG and Pipavav in Gujarat and Larsen & Turbo with headquarters in Mumbai. These vessels would reportedly transfer personnel, food, fuel and oil to the battle groups operating across the deep ocean waters away from neighbouring ports. At present, Indian Navy has two carriers in use – the INS Vikramaditya and the INS Viraat, and one under construction at Cochin Shipyard – the Vikrant. Air Force has also been provided with 32 HAL-built Dhruv Advanced Light Utility Helicopters – used in troop transport, air assault, ground attack, cargo, etc – worth ₹7,000 crore. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd would supply 16 helicopters each to the Indian Coast Guard and the Navy and would also provide maintenance for the machines. Navy, Air Force and Army would also get equipments needed in search and rescue operations worth ₹900 crore.DAC cleared projects worth almost one-third of the total allocation of ₹94,588 crore for defence capital expenditure in the Union Budget by Jaitley, according to New Indian Express.last_img read more

PIC Can you guess why is Priyanka Chopra being trolled over this

Posted on by

first_imgInstagramThe controversies and trolling over Priyanka Chopra’s birthday doesn’t seem to be dying out anytime soon. The diva, who celebrated her birthday in style, got mired in a series of controversies owing to her Miami vacation.First, a picture of Priyanka Chopra trying to blow out sparkling candles on her birthday cake paved way for fans to troll the actress. While many called Priyanka ‘dumb’ many showed sympathy towards Nick Jonas. Then, a picture of Priyanka Chopra having a smoke along with mother and husband made its way to the social media and what followed was constant backlash and criticism over Priyanka’s smoking. Priyanka drew ire of the netizens as they reminded her about her ‘asthma’ which she had said was suffering from since childhood and had urged everyone not to burst crackers on Diwali.Third, with Assam drowning in floodwaters, Priyanka Chopra, who is the brand ambassador of Assam Tourism, having fun in the waters at Miami also drew flak. And now, the actress is being trolled for her fashion choices. A picture shared by Priyanka, shows the actress wearing sheer gloves with a pink bikini. While we absolutely love Priyanka’s style, Netizens are finding it difficult to digest. When cousin Parineeti Chopra was asked to comment on it, she said in an interaction with India Today, “I respond by saying that I have no right to answer this question, so I won’t.”Priyanka however, gave a royal snub to the haters by acknowledging the good wishes that came her way. 5 TV Shows To BingeWatch During A Winter Storm

Posted on by

first_img Share Thomas Gloning/Getty ImagesTV Shows To Binge-Watch During The ‘Bomb Cyclone’The snow and severe cold of the “bomb cyclone” currently hitting the East Coast is no joke. But for a TV nerd, a storm that shuts down work and school means more time for binge-watching!It may be only a day or two, so viewing choices are crucial. Can’t waste time with dramas that go nowhere or marginally funny sitcoms (yes, Twin Peaks and Curb Your Enthusiasm, I’m talking about you). I’m here to give you some suggestions tailored to your tastes. Hopefully, these shows will act like a hot bowl of chicken soup and a thick, warm blanket. If you’re a sci-fi geek looking to disappear into new worlds …Netflix‘s latest season of Black Mirror is the perfect getaway for a day inside; an anthology series with exquisitely framed stories on how technology can transform society and individuals. It’s like The Twilight Zone for an era of Snapchat and self-driving cars. Season four’s batch of six episodes stand out because few fans can agree on which episodes are best. This unapologetic Star Trek geek loved “USS Callister,” a story about a coding nerd who creates a virtual reality fantasy game where all the people who torment him at work are recreated as characters in a Trek-like starship which he commands. “Black Museum” is a convoluted but compelling story about how human consciousness is stored inside artifacts within the most depressing exhibits on Earth. And “Arkangel” is a Jodie Foster-directed morality play on the dangers of installing a chip that allows parents to see what their kids see and affect perception through a tablet computer. Before long, you’ll be tethered to your streaming device like one of the characters from the episode. If you’re a comedy nerd with a taste for period drama … Amazon‘s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the tale of a 1950s housewife who develops a career in stand-up comedy after her husband — who she had been supporting in his hobby as a comic — leaves her. It’s partly a look at the early days of stand-up (Midge Maisel enlists the help of legendary comic Lenny Bruce to hone her act). And it’s a wonderful showcase for star Rachel Brosnahan, who snaps off the one-liners (provided by creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, of Gilmore Girls fame) as if she were born to play this character. If you’re a sucker for stories about blood feuds between powerful men …Showtime‘s Billions was one of the best dramas no one talked about last year. Its most recent, 12-episode season is available for viewing through the premium cable channel’s streaming platforms, and earlier seasons are available through Amazon. The show features Damian Lewis as the billionaire head of a top New York hedge fund and Paul Giamatti as the U.S. attorney obsessed with arresting him. Giamatti’s final scene in the season is one of the best moments of acting I saw on TV last year. If you’re a Star Trek fan on a budget …The first half-season of the newest Trek TV series, Star Trek: Discovery, is available for viewing on the streaming service CBS All Access. (It costs $5.99 with ads, but you can sign-up for a free, 7-day trial and watch the first nine episodes of Star Trek: Discovery in one binge.) This show has boldly tried re-inventing and updating Trek, and, after the first episode, it works. You’ll see one of Trek’s coolest heroes in Sonequa Martin-Green’s Starfleet mutineer Michael Burnham, a human orphan raised as an adopted daughter by Mr. Spock’s dad, Sarek. What self-respecting Trekkie could pass up that?If you love behind-the-scenes stories about the craziest figures in music…The Cinemax series Mike Judge Presents: Tales from the Tour Bus is an overlooked gem. Judge (co-creator of King of the Hill and Silicon Valley) puts together Behind the Music-style documentaries about legendarily dysfunctional figures like Johnny Paycheck and Jerry Lee Lewis. He interviews relatives, employees and members of their backup bands. Then, he animates their stories. Judge recreates a scene of Lewis shooting up a dental lab with a machine gun, and one of Paycheck’s backup musicians declaring “there’s nothing worse than a hillbilly with a hit record.” It’s funny, shocking and a great counterbalance to the perfectly manicured images some country artists present these days. (Tales From the Tour Bus is available by subscription on Cinemax, or for $1.99 per half-hour episode on YouTube or Google Play.)Copyright 2018 NPR. In addition, you can view a live stream while browsing the program guide.AT&T also is offering access for up to three simultaneous streams per account, up from two available in the initial version. However, it will cost extra: a third stream will be an additional $5 per month on top of the price of a customer’s DirecTV Now package.DirecTV Now’s True Cloud DVR, which had been available in a limited beta trial, is now available to all subscribers and includes 20 hours of free recording available for up to 30 days. Later this summer, AT&T plans to add the option for DirecTV Now customers to record up to 100 hours, with programs stored for up to 90 days, for an additional $10 per month. Also, DirecTV Now users will be able to access local TV channels in other cities when they’re outside their home market, according to AT&T. For example, subscribers who live in L.A. can now watch the local TV stations in New York or other areas if they’re traveling (depending on availability of local channels on DirecTV Now).AT&T also has expanded the video-on-demand lineup on DirecTV Now, providing access to more than 25,000 titles depending on subscription package. The service, first launched in December 2016, joins a competitive field of other over-the-top, “skinny bundle” pay-TV packages — and the enhancements promise to give DirecTV Now more firepower in vying with rivals. Competitors include YouTube TV, Hulu With Live TV, Sling TV, PlayStation Vue and FuboTV. AT&T has begun rolling out its previously promised app update for DirecTV Now internet-TV streaming service — which among other features will soon give all subscribers access to a DVR with up to 20 hours of storage for no extra cost. The revised DirecTV Now app, with a new look-and-feel, is rolling out starting Tuesday on recent-generation Apple iOS/tvOS devices and supported web browsers, according to AT&T. The new version of the DirecTV Now app will be available for Android, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku devices in the next few weeks.AT&T is moving aggressively to promote DirecTV Now, as cord-cutting continues to hurt its traditional pay-TV businesses. In the first three months of 2018, AT&T added 312,000 DirecTV Now net new customers to reach 1.46 million subscribers. That offset losses for DirecTV’s U.S. satellite service — however, the shift to cheaper, internet-delivered TV has cut into AT&T Entertainment Group’s revenue and profitability.center_img ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Plug In or Tune Out

first_img Register Now » Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. From versatile smartphones such as the Motorola Droid and BlackBerry Bold 9700 to cutting-edge e-readers such as Amazon’s bestselling Kindle 2 and Barnes & Noble’s nook units, 2009 was awash in technological innovations. But talk about New Year’s revolutions: Even at this early stage, from USB 3.0 devices to 3-D televisions, it’s apparent that 2010 will be just as slammed–if not more so–with new advances in small business tech and gadgets. But despite hogging the lion’s share of the headlines, the newest, shiniest gadgets aren’t always the most realistic or affordable solutions for today’s entrepreneur. In the interest of practicality, here are five essential technologies and types of consumer electronics no small business owner in 2010 should be without, as well as five more you’d do just as well (at least temporarily) to press the pause button on.Plug InSmartphones: A must-have accessory for modern business owners, these high-powered cell phones essentially serve as a portable office in your pocket, giving you one-stop access to contacts, calendars, calls, e-mails, and the Web wherever you travel. Thanks to increasing broadband connection speeds; more comprehensive e-mail and text and multimedia messaging capability; better multitasking abilities; and growing support for third-party apps that add an endless array of functionality, today’s top models all make a sound investment. While you can expect to spend roughly $200 (with contract) for leading units like the iPhone 3G S, the outlay quickly pays itself back, especially if you also leverage built-in audio and video recording and social networking capabilities to create content, connect with consumers and promote your brand. Among the hottest recent innovations here is Qik, a mobile app that lets you stream live video right from your handset. New models for 2010 will offer advancements like sharper and brighter OLED screens, brawnier processors, more intuitive interfaces, Wi-Fi connectivity and next-gen operating systems such as Android and webOS. Google’s new Nexus One (a speedy, intuitive phone with lots of potential for expansion) is expected to be among the year’s hottest new models.Netbooks : While we’ve touched on the benefits of netbooks before, it bears reiterating. Units such as HP’s Mini 311 and Toshiba’s NB205 can make great value-minded solutions for your mobile workforce, especially with the advent of Microsoft’s Windows 7, which provides greater performance and stability. While these systems tend to go light on muscle, making them unsuitable for advanced computing functions such as editing high-definition video or premium desktop publishing, most business owners won’t mind. That’s because the systems’ low- to mid-range capabilities serve just fine for everyday e-mail, word processing and Web surfing activities, as well as 80 to 90 percent of most other routine professional tasks. This year’s hottest units will introduce touchscreen capability, dedicated graphics cards, additional computing power and even sleeker and lighter frames at lower cost. Look for tablet PCs like Apple’s upcoming model to give these devices a run for their money, however.Bluetooth headsets: Prized for their convenience, given that the gadgets enable effortless hands-free calling, these wireless earpieces can save you from accidentally starting a 20-car pileup when attempting to phone the home office while barreling down the freeway. Just one word of advice: Tech etiquette demands you take them out of your ear when not in use, as leaving one in while wandering the streets is a major fashion faux pas in the geek chic canon. Among other options offered by new models in 2010 will be better-fitting and more comfortable designs, longer battery life/talk time and enhanced noise filtering, so you can chat away without busy background environments providing an unwanted soundtrack.GPS navigation systems: While critics debate the value of standalone models such as those offered by TomTom and Garmin, there’s no getting around it: These gizmos, which provide on-screen and spoken turn-by-turn directions, remain among the tech industry’s most useful accessories. Thankfully, increasing inclusion of GPS units as a built-in feature on leading smartphones is helping to buoy the category as a whole, and save countless professionals the embarrassment of missing crucial meetings with clients or investors. The free Google Maps Navigation app is a must-have for any Android phone owner, while other smartphones may require the purchase of third-party software apps to access premium functions. Either way, though, these devices can help you get where you’re going in more ways than one, with 2010 bringing greater ubiquity for the category as a whole across mobile gadgets from portable media players to tablet computers.Budget digital camcorders: Looking for an affordable marketing platform? It’s hard to beat the reach and impact of video aggregators such as YouTube and Metacafe, or the power of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. With video quickly becoming the leading coin of the social media realm, now’s the time to consider picking up a mini HD camcorder like Kodak’s Zi8 , Creative’s Vado HD or Flip’s second-generation Mino HD. Not only do the sub-$200 devices shoot high-def video that’s good enough for your company’s blog or website. They also provide a ready means to build buzz, generate a following and possibly make headlines around the Web. In the next 12 months, you can plan on seeing even less expensive units with more storage space, better low-light performance and longer recording times. Coupled with the fact that some TV reporters are even using the devices to shoot footage for broadcast distribution, what can we say? It’s high time you gave the category a close-up.Tune OutE-readers: Despite the popularity of devices like Amazon’s Kindle family or Sony’s Reader series, these gadgets remain in their infancy, have several interface quirks to work out yet and still represent a small share of the overall publishing market. Costs are presently prohibitively high as well, making such units best suited to road warriors with a voracious appetite for information–not everyday business users. Granted, 2010 will bring numerous new models from Heart/Sprint’s Skiff to Asus’ dual color touchscreen-equipped unit. But with software solutions such as Blio already promising to offer access to e-books regardless of platform, it exposes the category’s Achilles heel: Why buy a single dedicated device to enjoy digital literature when a multifunction one you already own (e.g. a smartphone) offers immediate cost savings and more benefits?Solid state drives: Solid state hard drives offer several upsides over traditional storage solutions, generally being speedier, more reliable and less prone to hardware failure. But costs are still strikingly high (you’ll literally pay thousands for a 1TB drive vs. around $100 for a similarly sized standard model), making it more reasonable to create routine backups using traditional hard drives for a fraction of the price. While asking prices are sure to drop as the year goes on, realize. It’s still going to be a ways before the cost/benefit tradeoff weighs out reasonably on anything except smaller models, e.g. those that come in sizes of 128GB or less.Blu-Ray Players: Don’t go replacing your collection of corporate training videos with high-definition Blu-Ray discs just yet. Not only does sharper-looking video seldom offer much practical benefit to the typical business owner, but it also comes with a higher price tag attached. Moreover, these devices still haven’t reached critical mass in terms of consumer uptake, meaning the amount of content providers producing material in the format remains smaller than in the DVD market. Also worth keeping in mind too: As we’ll see in 2010 and beyond, streaming video will continue to rise in popularity, which may largely negate physical media-based content’s relevance in the very near future.Tablet PCs: Certainly, there’s been renewed interest in tablet computers (touchscreen notebook PCs) courtesy of Apple’s recent rumored efforts in the space. But don’t forget: We’ve seen these types of systems before, and while they may appeal to certain niche markets (graphic designers, architects, artists, etc.), the average small-business owner may not enjoy any upside here. That goes double given that the units–typically mid-range systems in terms of tech specs–are caught between smartphones on the low end of the spectrum, which are rapidly increasing in power, and full-size high-end laptops, which are rapidly coming down in price as well.Cloud Computing Solutions: The benefits of cloud computing are numerous, among them options to store and access data remotely, take your workspace nearly anywhere and collaborate virtually in real-time with clients and colleagues across multiple continents and time zones. However, while a fan of services such as Google Docs, Zoho Suite and Microsoft Office 2010 myself, there’s no getting around it: Killer apps remain in shortly supply and there are still major potential security issues to be addressed here. On the bright side, with the impending launch of Google’s Chrome OS, which puts Web-based applications first, we could see major advancements in the field before 2010 is through. No arguments on this end: Cloud computing is important, and almost certainly the way of the future. It’s just that today’s small-business market remains a considerable ways yet from completely untethering from the traditional desktop.
