DONEGAL FAMILY GETS EXTRA RESOURCE HOURS FOR THEIR CHILD IN HIGH COURT BATTLE

Posted on by

first_imgA Donegal family is one of two who have taken a High Court challenge over resource hours for their children who have special needs. The two families, whose children are Down Syndrome, have been successful in getting more than four extra hours for their children each week. The extra hours were granted by President of the High Court, Justice Nicholas Kearns. Speaking after the case, Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty said he was very happy for both families.“I am delighted that the parents have been successful in the High Court challenge and that the maximum resource hours have been allocated to the children at the centre of this case.“Today’s outcome is a vindication of the long campaign that the parents have fought to ensure that their children receive the appropriate resource hour allocation. I commend them on their tireless campaign and on their victory today.“It is also an indictment of the Government’s approach to this issue and I look forward to the day when parents of children with Down Syndrome or other conditions no longer have to battle with the state in order to ensure that their children’s needs are recognised and appropriate supports put in place.”DONEGAL FAMILY GETS EXTRA RESOURCE HOURS FOR THEIR CHILD IN HIGH COURT BATTLE was last modified: June 27th, 2014 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Charity box theft won’t dim the Whoriskey’s Christmas spirit

Posted on by

first_imgKerrykeel couple Mary and Michael Whoriskey have vowed not to let this week’s burglary dim their Christmas spirit. Each year, the kind-hearted couple sets up an amazing Christmas lights display outside their home at Gortcally. The event has raised thousands for local charities in the past 15 years and large crowds came out for the big switch-on on Friday night last. But the Whoriskeys were shocked yesterday to find that the charity donation box was stolen from their entrance gate. As garda investigations get underway, Mary tells Donegal Daily that the burglary was a disheartening blow to their joyous fundraiser.“I just couldn’t believe it. We are coming on 16 years and nobody has ever laid a finger on anything,” Mary said. The sad discovery was made shortly before 11pm last night, when Mary when to take the donation box inside for the night. Proceeds from this year’s display will be donated to Donegal Hospice and the local Mevagh Voluntary Fire Service.“I went down to say a prayer at the crib, like I always do, and to unlock the box and take it inside. But it was gone.” Mary Whoriskey“I was upset at first,” Mary said, but she soon came to look on the positive side of the incident and hopes that no substantial donations were made during the day.She said: “I thought to myself ‘you hate for this to happen’ but Monday is a quiet day for us. I looked back on my records from the same Monday last year and we didn’t take in much. So, for it to happen, it was the best night.”Having trusted people to visit their home at Christmas for the past 16 years, Mary said she won’t let the burglary stop their charitable efforts.“It’s a lesson learned. Michael will be in the workshop soon making a lock so good they’ll need cutters to take it away. “I know in my heart and soul this was nobody from the locality. We have people travelling from all over to visit and we love to see people coming.” Whoriskeys Christmas Lights Display 2019Before the new box is made, anyone visiting in the next few days is invited to make a donation directly to Mary.“I’ll be at home in the kitchen, all donations will be very welcome,” she said.Meanwhile, Gardaí have launched a public appeal for information relating to the burglary. The theft occurred sometime between 3.30pm and 10.30pm at the Whoriskey’s house at Gortcally, outside Kerrykeel, on Monday 25th November. The donation box is described as a handpainted box with white lettering.  Anyone with any information is being urged to contact Milford Garda Station on (074) 915 3060Charity box theft won’t dim the Whoriskey’s Christmas spirit was last modified: November 28th, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Little Bugs with Mighty Powers

Posted on by

first_img(Visited 576 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 Bugs so small you could step on them, but if we were their size, we could never do what they do.G-ForceThis Beetle Can Withstand 40 Times More G-Force Than a Fighter Pilot (National Geographic). Ever watched a click beetle? Maybe not since you were a kid. These amazing beetles can leap up into the air and right themselves when they have fallen on their backs. Liz Langley writes, “Click beetles are among nature’s many unsung acrobats with clever strategies for escape.” There are 900 species of click beetles that use this trick. Here’s how it works:When threatened, the insect will contract a hinge that holds together two segments of its body, says Gal Ribak of Tel-Aviv University’s Biomechanics of Animal Locomotion Laboratory.Releasing that elastic energy causes an audible click and accelerates the beetles into the air at 380 times the force of gravity—leaving predators mystified.Langley includes accounts of other animals that are “aerialists that perform amazing airborne feats—sometimes with no feets at all.” A Moroccan spider named flic flac, for instance, can cartwheel away from danger, even going uphill. And a spider in Trinidad can whirl in circles so fast, it looks like a blur to the human eye. The article briefly mentions birds that walk down tree trunks, flying rays, pirouetting sharks, and has a 32-photo gallery of various leaping animals, including birds, fish and mammals.Magnetic NavigationNavigating with the sixth sense: desert ants sense Earth’s magnetic field (University of Würzburg). It’s unbelievable enough that salmon and sea turtles could navigate by the earth’s magnetic field, but ants? Such tiny insects; how do they do it? Researchers at the University of Würzburg, using controlled magnetic conditions, found that they indeed can. The details can be read in an open-access paper in Current Biology. The press release says,Desert ants (Cataglyphis) spend the first weeks of their life exclusively in their dark underground nest. For around four weeks, they nurse the queen and the brood, dig tunnels, build chambers or tidy up. At some point, they leave the nest to start their outdoor career, working as foragers until their death. Before an ant sets out to forage, it has to calibrate its navigational system, however. For this purpose, the insects exhibit a rather peculiar behaviour during two to three days: They perform so-called learning walks to explore the vicinity of the nest entrance and frequently turn about their vertical body axes while doing so. High-speed video recordings show that the ants stop repeatedly during these pirouetting motions. What is special about the longest of these stopping phases is that at this moment the ants always look back precisely to the nest entrance, although they are unable to see the tiny hole in the ground.Researchers from the Biocenter of the University of Würzburg have now made the surprising discovery that the desert ant uses the Earth’s magnetic field as orientation cue during these calibration trips. This ability had been previously unknown for desert ants.Dragonfly (Corel Professional Photos)AerogelWorld’s oldest insect inspires a new generation of aerogels (Newcastle University). When dragonflies complete their metamorphosis, their wings come out out like jelly, but within minutes they expand and become completely dry. Inspired by what they saw, the wizards at Newcastle University designed an aerogel that mimics the dragonfly’s secret. They tell how they did it, but more interesting are the dragonflies themselves. If they evolved, like this article claims, it means that some of the most advanced insect flyers just popped into existence without ancestors.“These ancient insects were around long before the dinosaurs evolved,“ explains Dejan Kulijer, from the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.“They are one of the oldest insect groups to take flight and include the largest insect that ever lived – the Griffenfly – that had a wingspan of more than 70 cm” [28 inches].Their wings are a porous, layered structure similar to an aerogel and are so strong and light they can carry the insect up to 30 miles in an hour.“A dragonfly’s wings are an ultralight aerogel – making up less than 2% of the insect’s total body weight – and yet they are so strong they can carry the insect thousands of miles across oceans and between continents,” says Dr Šiller, who worked on the research together with colleagues from Newcastle University, Durham University and Limerick University, Ireland, as well as experts from the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Jumps and LeapsWhy a robot can’t yet outjump a flea: How small creatures generate world’s fastest snaps, jumps and punches (Duke University Today). No robot designer has been able to imitate the mighty leap of the tiny flea. These insects jump so fast and far, they seem to vanish from sight. The opening of this fun article shows a flea jumping in slow motion, but mentions that it’s not the only champion in the animal olympics. Here are more challengers for robot designers:Take the smashing mantis shrimp, a small crustacean not much bigger than a thumb. Its hammer-like mouthparts can repeatedly deliver 69-mile-per-hour wallops more than 100 times faster than the blink of an eye to break open hard snail shells.Or the unassuming trap-jaw ant: In a zero-to-60 matchup, even the fastest dragster would have little chance against its snapping mandibles, which reach speeds of more than 140 miles per hour in less than a millisecond to nab their prey. One of the fastest accelerations known on Earth is the hydra’s sting. These soft-bodied aquatic creatures defend themselves with help from capsules along their tentacles that act like pressurized balloons. When triggered, they fire a barrage of microscopic poison spears that briefly accelerate 100 times faster than a bullet.Another video clip in the article shows a trap-jaw ant launching itself into the air with its mandible. It had to be filmed at 3,000 frames per second to see the action. Also praised in the article are the chameleon, the Venus flytrap, and the froghopper:A short-legged insect called the froghopper, for example, has a bow-like structure called the pleural arch that acts like a spring. Latch-like protrusions on their legs control its release, allowing them to leap more than 100 times their body length despite their short legs. A person with that much power could jump nearly two football fields. Each of these feats, the article explains, doesn’t require muscle action. They work with spring-loaded parts that fire like a taut bowstring. The paper in Science Magazine delves into “The principles of cascading power limits in small, fast biological and engineered systems,” describing a new model designed at Duke to explain the power requirements and specifications for such powerful leaps. The press release explains why robot makers can’t yet match these natural achievements:The model has major implications for engineers. It suggests that robots can’t yet outjump a flea in part because such quick, repeatable movements require components to be exquisitely fine-tuned to each other.Don’t tell the Discovery Institute. Incidentally, a new species of fossil dragonfly was named after the Revolutionary, Dr Michael Behe (Evolution News). The wonders of nature inspire kids. The wonders of nature inspire adults. The wonders of nature inspire scientists and engineers. Anyone left out? There is one thing that reduces inspiration, like poking a hole in a hot air balloon. It’s the idea that these wonders just happened by chance. Darwinian hot air is not sufficient to substitute for the fires of inspiration lit by the wonders of nature. Keep those Darwinists with their spears away from the big, beautiful balloon celebration.Credit: J.B. Greenelast_img read more

The wig in the image is the wig i desired. But the wig i acquired had a full fringe – it was a totally distinctive wig from the a single in the image. – even though it was a really nice wig and excellent benefit for funds, once again it was not the wig in the photo.Extravagant costume wig worth for cash excellent. This wig is okay for the price tag, i found when hoping to brush it, the hair would tumble out really simply, the parting of the hair isn’t the greatest but if your wanting a truly long black wig for halloween or a a single off event i would suggest it.Excellent wig, full and pure searching. Really full and all-natural seeking. The parting has some faux skin beneath so it doesn’t search quite phony. The hair is incredibly tender and it won’t have that dreadful plastic glow. Purchased it for reenactment but will also use it for halloween. Overall i am extremely satisfied with this wig. This wig is really long and quite really thick i was surprised i will surely be get againthankyou. The only trouble is that the parting of it is obvious it truly is bogus so i just dress in a bandana or a hat / beanie over it and you can not inform. It is really pretty and long and can be styled as its heat resistance. It truly is also incredibly long but not as well long would deffo advise for stage use & heading out in.last_img read more

King Corn Adds Acres

Posted on by

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Matthew Wilde Progressive Farmer Crops EditorMESERVEY, Iowa (DTN) — Midwest farmers are doing the unthinkable as the corn-planting window slams shut. Some growers are switching intended soybean acres to corn, or at least thinking about it. Usually the opposite happens in mid-to-late-May if corn isn’t in the ground due to yield-loss potential. But desperate times call for desperate measures, said Dave Nelson of rural Belmond, Iowa.Decade-low soybean prices and a re-energized U.S.-China trade war convinced the former Iowa Corn Growers Association president and his family — Dave farms with his brother, son and nephews — to plant another 1,000 acres of corn at the expense of the world’s most popular legume. Now, 4,000 of the 6,500 acres that the family crops will be corn.Dave piloted a New Holland TG255 tractor pulling a 12-row Case I-H planter May 13 in a field near Meservey, Iowa, as other family members planted elsewhere. He seeded corn in a field intended for beans. Dave’s nephew, Josh Nelson, incorporated fertilizer and pre-emergent herbicide at the same time. Both were trying to beat impending rain that has dramatically slowed planting progress throughout the Midwest, which also played a part in the family’s decision. It’s the first time in nearly 50 years of farming Dave Nelson reduced soy acres in favor of corn with June fast approaching.“The market is telling us to switch,” Dave said as he planted corn. “Soybean prices have gotten worse and a trade deal with China doesn’t look like it will happen for a while. The profit potential for corn isn’t good, but it’s a lot better than soybeans.“Illinois, Missouri and the Dakotas are way behind and we’re able to plant,” he added. “That may help corn prices.”GRAIN COMPLEXBig U.S. soybean ending stocks and a recent setback in trade negotiations with China contributed to the lowest prices since 2007, according to DTN market analysts. The latest government estimate pegs the nation’s soy stockpile for 2019-20 at 970 million bushels, bolstered by China’s reluctance to buy from the U.S.November soybeans opened at $8.43 Tuesday, with cash prices less than $7.70 at many elevators and processors. Iowa State University (ISU) estimates the break-even price for soybeans averaging 62-bushels-per-acre at $8.86 per bushel.Corn futures have increased lately. December corn opened Tuesday at $3.83 per bushel. Cash prices are 30-40 cents less. ISU estimates the break-even price at $3.38/bu. for corn after soybeans averaging 218 bpa and $3.88 for corn-after-corn averaging 200 bpa.Planting less soy in favor of corn may be a good plan for some farmers, said Todd Hubbs, University of Illinois agricultural agronomist. Given current market dynamics and planting woes in much of the Corn Belt, he said farmers who can get corn in soon and possibly limit yield losses due to delays could benefit.“I can see that strategy making sense in Iowa, and possibly other areas,” Hubbs said. “There could be a significant amount of corn that isn’t planted nationwide, possibly 3 million acres, which may support prices come June.”PLANTING DELAYSAbout 79 million acres of soybeans and more than 71 ma of corn were unplanted as of May 12, according to prospective planting estimates and the latest USDA Crop Progress Report. Rains and cold weather hampered planting throughout major corn and soybean states this past week.Only 11% of Illinois’ corn is in the ground compared to the five-year average of 82%. Indiana is 6% done and North and South Dakota are 11% and 4% finished, respectively.Iowa is better off with 48% of its intended corn acres planted, four days behind last year and just over a week behind the five-year average. The planting clock is ticking loudly.ISU studies indicate corn, with a plant density of 35,000 per acre, on average will yield 87% of its potential when planted from May 15-25, 70% from May 25-June 5 and 54% from June 5-15. Research shows soybean yields, on average, decline by 0.25 to 0.9 bushels for every day that seed isn’t in the ground after May 15.The 50% corn planting completion threshold wasn’t met in Iowa only five times prior to this year in the last 40 years. In each of those years, the statewide yield was below trend line.CORN OPTIMISMDave Nelson hopes to break the trend. The family is more than half-done with corn. If they get yields 180-bpa to more than 200-bpa, and prices jump 30 cents, they can make a profit unlike on soybeans.“Some of the fields we’re switching raise a lot better corn,” he said. The thought of planting soybeans and losing money is dejecting, Josh Nelson added. There wasn’t a debate among the family members about swapping soy acres for corn.“It’s shear economics,” Josh said. “Planting soy just didn’t pencil out. A lot of farmers are in a similar boat.”He may be right. Several ISU Extension regional agronomists mentioned during a recent conference call that many farmers statewide are swapping some soy acres to corn, according to Mark Licht, ISU Extension cropping systems agronomist.High yield potential for corn is still possible by planting well-adapted full season hybrids up until June 1, Licht said. After that date, he recommends switching to earlier maturing corn.“Agronomically speaking, it’s easier to switch to corn from soybeans,” Licht said. “It usually doesn’t happen because of yield potential.”Contact Matthew at matt.wilde@dtn.comFollow him on Twitter @progressivwilde(ES/SK)© Copyright 2019 DTN/The Progressive Farmer. But I started to join the pros. Arsenal is a great club, but I needed playing time. I had to play, and I preferred to leave. “It was difficult to stay at Arsenal in the sense that there were big names and a new coach (Unai Emery). I spoke with Per Mertesacker who made me a little hesitant.”He really wanted me to stay. But I felt that the best solution was to leave. At that time I did not yet have contact with Sion, but with other clubs. I was contacted by Sion fifteen days after my decision to leave. I had a preference to return to France but despite some contacts it is Sion who had my preference.” last_img read more
