Singur farmers hold rally to demand return of land

Posted on by

first_imgThousands of people on Wednesday took out a rally in Hooghly district’s Singur, demanding the return of their farmland with the slogan: “Tata go back from Singur”. The rally started at the Sahanapara locality and concluded at the main gate of the Tata Motors’ aborted Nano factory site in Singur. Around 7,000 villagers, mostly ‘unwilling’ farmers and their family members, participated in the rally that was spearheaded by Trinamool MLA from Haripal and Singur anti-farmland acquisition committee’s convener Becharam Manna.”We participated in the rally because we want our farmland back. The state government has already taken possession of the acquired land which had been handed over to the Nano factory,” Mahadeb Das, an ‘unwilling’ farmer of Singur, said during the rally. The ‘unwilling’ farmers marched across many villages in and around Singur with placards reading “Tata go back and vacate our farmland”. They also welcomed the state government’s “historic decision” to reclaim the land.”We are very happy. We will now get back our land from the factory,” Das said. According to the records available, over 3,000 ‘unwilling’ farmers never accepted the compensation against their acquired land.Meanwhile, a section of the Singur villagers entered the Nano factory site as the private security guards were withdrawn from the premises on Wednesday morning. They ransacked the abandoned car manufacturing unit and allegedly took away some electric poles, asbestos sheets and iron rods from the Tata Motors unit.”Around 50 villagers, not part of the rally, managed to sneak into the factory and made off with some material,” a Singur villager said.advertisementVisiting Singur on Wednesday, social activist Medha Patkar welcomed the new state government’s move to return the land to the ‘unwilling’ farmers. “Now we can say the farmers of Singur fought bravely and got their due,” Patkar, who also undertook a rally in the area, said. She appealed to the state government to keep in mind the interests of sharecroppers and landless labourers while returning the acquired land. The Forward Bloc, which is among the Left Front constituents, on Wednesday squarely blamed the Tatas for acquiring the “fertile Singur land” for setting up industry. “We all know the land was fertile and the Tata Motors had forcibly acquired the land. The people are watching everything and they will not like this attitude of the Tatas,” party state secretary Ashok Ghosh said. For more News, click here. For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more

Jeev Milkha Singh targets Major ambitions at The Open

Posted on by

first_imgThe last time Jeev Milkha Singh turned up for The Open, he had to leave even before the tournament began in 2009 at Turnberry and two years before that he missed the cut at Carnoustie. So there is some unfinished business at The Open for the Chandigarh golfer.India has a lot of interest in this year’s edition with Anirban Lahiri and Daniel Chopra, the Indo-Swede, also in the field. This is only the second time two Indians are teeing up at The Open. The first time it happened in 2009, Jeev pulled out before the start due to injury, while Gaganjeet Bhullar missed the cut on debut.Jeev comes as almost the last man to get into The Open by winning the Scottish Open to end a four-year title drought.Jeev, whose sole top-10 in a Major has been tied ninth at the PGA Championships in 2008, is hoping to continue his great form in links golf.”I like golf in tough and testing conditions. Wind, cold and even rain makes golf, particularly links Golf a real challenge and I actually love it, even though many find it taxing and even frustrating,” says Jeev. The two-time Asian Tour number one produced a stunning play-off victory in Scotland and now wants to treat his third Open appearance as just another tournament. He did not subject himself to any additional pressure by flying to his London home to relax for a day before coming to Lytham on Monday evening and then playing just six holes on Tuesday.advertisement”The course is looking superb. It is in great shape, just the way an Open course is expected to be. The key is to avoid the bunkers of which there are 206, and the rough is unforgiving. So one has to hit straight, stay in the fairways and not get too ambitious,” said Jeev.”This is just another week for me. I’m not going to treat it differently. I want to treat it like another event. That’s why I’ve just showed up on Tuesday and take it from there.”However, the Indian has yet to pop a bottle of bubbly to celebrate his 14th international victory. “It was great satisfaction winning against a top field and tough conditions. We didn’t celebrate. All plans had to change (as he initially wasn’t in The Open field) and I went back to London, got in at 1.30am after Sunday. We didn’t have a chance to celebrate but we’ll do it next week,” he said. “I take a lot of confidence and want to move back into the top-50 and do well in the Majors.”Jeev is happy not just with his form but the fact that he is injury-free. He won four times in 2006 and four times in 2008, followed by a tough period with injuries.”It was a frustrating period. You just have to hang in there and believe that things will turn around. If you do the right stuff, good things will happen,” he said. “When a player is injury-free, he can work harder. It gives him more confidence. Last few weeks, I was having two or three good rounds. I just needed to put in four good rounds. It happened last week and the win came.”last_img read more

Zhang, the 24-year-old World Champion, closed it out in five games to win four games to one- 18-16, 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 13-11.”I’m very excited, it’s my first time at the Olympics and it has been my dream to win the gold medal since I started playing,” Zhang said.”I feel like I have completed a mission. In table tennis there can only be one winner.”It is a third-successive Olympic final defeat for Wang, who stalled Zhang’s march to victory by winning game four and putting up considerable resistance in game five.”Everyone wants to win the gold, but I lost to a teammate so it’s not so serious. I’ve done my best,” Wang said.”The first game was quite important. The others followed as a result of that.”Earlier on Wednesday, Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov won a captivating bronze medal match against Chuang Chih-Yuan of Chinese Taipei.Ovtcharov, the World No.12, triumphed four games to two in a 12-10, 9-11, 8-11, 13-11, 11-5, 14-12 victory. In the women’s singles Wednesday, China’s Li Xiaoxia beat teammate Ding Ning in a controversial singles final.last_img read more
